Cup of Jones - December 20, 2018

How do you know I’m on vacation already? I totally missed that today was Thursday. I stayed up all night Tuesday, got on a 6 AM flight Wednesday morning, and then realized only a few hours ago what day today is. So while this episode is technically late, I had already shot it, and I’m happy to post it on the actual day I say it is in the video. This is a personal episode. I go over some quick studio/business updates at the start, but spend most of the time telling you about all the various offices I’ve worked in over the years to illustrate what a big deal it is for me to have a building all to ourselves. You have all accomplished something truly incredible this year, and hopefully this rambling monologue helps you understand its impact. I’m sure it’s hitting all 9 of us in separate ways. This is what the move means to me.

Happy Holidays! I’ll see you in 2019!

That's a very kind and inspiring thing to hear. Thank you!

Thank you!

Hey Jones! Hope your holiday was great! I live near LA, and a lot of people are coming to LA for the anniversary meet-up... so my question is, any cool/obscure hole-in-the-wall restaurant recommendations?

First of all: Happy New Year, Jones and the rest of the Allies! Now, to my question: what's with the export errors lately when rendering the EZA podcast? Have you recently changed your export settings or something? As someone who only watches the video versions it's always kind of a bummer, when I have to wait way longer for this version. Related to this, how come the video of the Recruit Me special also was delayed due to an export error, although you recorded it like three weeks ago? Couldn't you have exported and uploaded it back then? I hope this didn't come across as too harsh, just being curious. Can't wait for the studio! :)

What do you think about games without faces like Ashen and Absolver? Do you like this as an artistic choice or do you wish they would just take the time to put faces on the characters? Like, would you really want an Animal Crossing game without faces? https://i.ytimg.com/vi/9jhsSBEhe18/maxresdefault.jpg https://i.ytimg.com/vi/V-t-NVdIZ4w/maxresdefault.jpg

Hi Brandon. Over the past two month Box Peek was heavily promoted by multiple Allies, while No Redemption received no such attention. I know you like Box Peek more, and I think that No Redemption is way better, so it’s safe to say that they appeal to different audiences. I think that both of them are unique self-contained creations and both of them can be used to promote Easy Allies. So I suggest you to promote all types of your unique content and not stuck on one thing for several months, even if it’s your favorite.

Huge congratulations to you all, it’s a marvelous achievement and we all get to enjoy it. Cheers!

Hi Jones, could you please reiterate the dates for the Anniversary event in March? I've got down Concert on Sunday March 23 and Meetup probably on Monday March 24.

Hey Jones, with the move is the PO box going to remain the same or will it change? Love & Respect, Jarod

Hello! Are you going to try to design/build the studio with future improvements in mind? As in, if you get an upgrade down the line, will you have to tear everything apart?

Parasitepaladin

With the 6 rooms not being exclusive to any allies, would it be possible in the future for u guys to shoot shows in those spaces kinda like gonzo type of scenes shot with a handheld? The show Thanks For Playing.... from GT Viacom building is perfect example of using the spaces that's available. From the open floor space to an outdoor patio. I liked it because it created lots of varieties other than where Invisible Walls and Man Ups was shot.

What percentage of Gametrailers.com did you own when it was sold to Viacom?

This was a good lore dump

Cheers Brandon. Glad you and the EZA team are in a place to really have great success and opportunity to grow. Been watching gametrailers since early 2004. I remember shows like invisible walls, angry video game nerd, screw attack, the gametrailers user created content and a lot more. Also the forums we're a great place to discuss games. Miss the old employees like Shane Satterfield, Marcus Beer, Justin Spear, Ryan Stevens, Patrick Morales and others. I even remember your debut on the podcast when you were intorduced as the voice of gametrailers, I was like "holy shit the man himself". It's been a great journey, witnessed the company go through the rough times and the good times, and I truly think EZA is in the best state it has ever been between the two companies

Hope you had a great holiday and vacation. Cup of Jones has actually morphed into my favorite show you all do, probably because you're so personable. I'm a small YouTube content creator myself, flying by the seat of my pants as a parent of 3 with 40k subs and surviving both through ads on YT and through community support on patreon and through my live streams. I'm thankful every day I make just enough to keep pursuing this career in covering and talking about video games, in particular about Nintendo. I really came into GT when you guys hired Damiani. He probably doesn't remember me as the EiC of Zelda Informer back in the day when he ran The Hylia and then Zentendo. But I have never been more thankful to have discovered a group of people like this and it's why I have supported you all from day 1 as eza. You all really inspire me as a creator and I was thrilled this past year when I got to expand out of a tiny 6x8 room and into what I dub a in home studio space that likely is the size of your garage. As a mostly solo content creator, I do at times find difficulty even in this larger space because of difficulties with lighting, only having one professional camera that has to get moved around like crazy between shoots and trying to maintain multiple sets to give a unique feel and presence to my work. My question is, do you have any tips for a smaller solo creator in how to best maintain quality and have you ever run into a situation where you just simply don't want to go into to work that day, and if so, where did you find the motivation to push through. Also can you maybe dive a bit into some of the difficulties of working from home versus outside the home? Obviously there are benefits but I'm not sure most understand the drawbacks as well.

Happy holidays, Jones! Can't wait for the excitement in the new year

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Jones and Allies, can't wait to see what the year of 2019 is going to bring both with game and your business.

Jones, we love you and everything you stand for! Thank you for all your hard work and enjoy the break! I expect some new content and new space after the new year, but until then take the time for yourself, thank you so much for how much of yourself you have given to us, the patreons. Love you and enjoy the holidays, ~Logan Young

The idea is with the studio they can shoot more at the same time, for example Huber could be shooting a syndrome in the green screen room, Ben could be shooting a frame trap in the podcast room, Jones could be doing a Cup of Jones at his home setup, and blood could be filming blood packed in the streaming room. Obviously not going to work out 100% like that, but you get the idea. If they work out the schedule it's possible to film more shows in one day.

Cheers to you too Brandon and the Easy Allies team. I want to share my experience I've had with Gametrailers and Easy Allies. Back in the day I was looking for HD movies trailers. At the time Apple was hosting them. I thought that was great and soon wondered if something similar existed for games. I ended up finding Gametrailers. I didn’t post much myself when given the ability but I certainly used it to judge what games I should buy. Later on I watched Pack Attack and more reviews. Then something interesting happened. I didn’t know the specifics but I started to see some creative shows being posted. I found myself watching Mandatory Update and The Final Bosman. I relating more on a personal and creative level with the people behind the scene. It wasn’t just characters playing a part but real people trying to do what they love. This is why I’m an Easy Allies patreon. I haven’t been one very long on a pay grade but have been a fan for a long time. It was nice to hear your backstory. I’d like to hear from the other allies as well. The weird thing is, watching all your shows and seeing your personalities click doing what you love, I feel left out. I want to be apart of something like that. I’ll continue watching but this is the kind of support we have for Easy Allies. You just want to be part of the team. You’re message definitely reverberates that it’s all about the support you have been given. I’m glad you guys are getting a studio, I’m happy you guys get to continue doing what you do, you all deserve it. Just let me know when you have an opening :)

gamerjerome

I don’t like being the negative guy but it’s been expressed that time is a constant central issue. It’s even been said monthly/occasional things are hard to do. This is why when I hear “new ideas” i just wonder where the time will come from. I don’t know perhaps I’m just thinking too much or I’m missing something. You guys have been doing well with your limited exclusives so there’s that.

Soul

During the beginnings of EZA, a lot of people were disappointed that there were no bits at the end of your videos. You all explained that it was too hard to schedule everyone to come in for something that is only 30 seconds to a few minutes long every video. You also said that it was easier to make bits when you were all in an office together. I need to know Jones, are bits coming back?

Cheers! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
