Box Peek September Update

Happy October! It's time for the September Box Peek Update!

Production Update:
September was not a great Box Peek month--I have all my character/prop art done but none of the backgrounds for Episode 10. Still, the episode isn't far from being ready for filming, which means October will be the month I finally get back to shooting and editing. (It also means I've drawn my final CD, Kazomi, and Jordy, which is definitely a strange feeling.)
The date of Box Peek's premiere will depend on how October goes. Honestly there were a couple of weeks where I was working on my Game Boy game instead of Box Peek, but the good news is that baby is officially all wrapped up.

When I said last month that my dream was to premiere before Death Stranding launches, I seriously thought the release date was November 25th. Alas, I've learned it is actually November 8th. My dream remains the same but definitely became a dumber dream. I'll do what I can, and next month's update will probably have a clear date or at least narrow window for the actual season two premiere date. The actual goal is still just to get it out before the end of 2019.

Behind-the-Scenes Thoughts:
Making my Game Boy game definitely did not help Box Peek get done faster, but in a weird way it gave me more confidence in my subconscious creative ability, the one that activates when I stop worrying about details. (If you're curious what I'm talking about: https://kylebosman.itch.io/dont-call-me-mama-but-yes-i-am-your-mama ) I understand better that working on a secret thing for months and years can really make you question the value of your work. Imagine thinking a joke you wrote 26 months ago is still funny.
I believe I wanted to get that game done to sort of prove it to myself that I still got it. I know that I could have delayed it and no one would have cared, but I've been crunching the project for the last couple of weeks as a matter of personal pride. That weird little game is far from perfect, but I like what I did there. Sitting back at Box Peek Studios (my kitchen table) I feel a certain familiar smugness, that inner "oh yeah baby, I got this."
I'm still uncertain that Season 2 will be entertaining and interesting, but I feel a renewed confidence that I might be making something Pretty Good.

Look out for October's (hopefully unspooky) update around this time next month!
Thanks again for your continued patience and support,
Kyle

Thanks for this update! So excited to see the premier of Season 2 edging closer. I think that we as a community believes in you and we will really enjoy it, no matter what!

Kyle, everything you do is golden. You have an insightful mind about what entertains people. I'm betting your anxieties are only soothed by such analysis about what makes creations successful. So, have faith in your instincts. As long as you care, you are always destined to produce great things. You have been ever since 6 years ago when you came on the scene with The Final Bosman. Creating good media is just second nature to you.

MrMattatee

Fair play Kyle, you put in so much work to everything you do.

Having not seen the gameboy streams seeing the end product was maybe one of my favorite EZA moments. Kyle, you blew my socks off with amazing pixel art and a game narrative that I could only describe as 'so Kyle'. I've always enjoyed your view points and commentary but your creative creations have been so much better then I was imagining. Keep doing you, I love your visions for your projects and your sense of humor. I want DCMBYIAYM in Death Stranding, I want to see Norman Reedus sit down in a grassy field and contemplate when to fire assistant. Keep it up!

I'm glad to hear that the time taken away by the Game Boy game ended up working out for you anyway. And yes, you absolutely got this!

Asbo Zappruder

Oh yeah baby! You DO got this!

I'm guessing Box Peek will be a good Christmas present.

The game's story and visual details are phenomenal. It's given me (even more) confidence in the outcome of Box Peek. :-)

TurboChickenMan

I love that Gameboy game you made. Glad that it helped you.

LeeLore

Hey, good luck to you too!

These posts are really therapeutic for me, as I'm grinding away at my graduation project (a music game for preschool kids). It really strengthens me knowing that you sometimes have the same doubts as me. Thanks for sharing your process, and good luck this month.

I love that DCMBYIAYM has helped crystallize your creative confidence. There is something so curiously satisfying about not wanting to fire your spunky assistant, but understanding that firing her is essential to creating the best genomster, the ultimate goal of the prequel. You (Kyle) do have a particular esoteric style of comedy that I just can’t help but laugh at. What I love most is that once you present me with a premise, however crazy, I personally feel that all your writing makes absolute sense and feels like the funniest version of the moments you create. There’s always context, there’s always foreshadowing, and every payoff feels really earned. Certainly City and the world as a whole has so many lovely built in lore facets, and Jordie is a great audience surrogate to help introduce everything. More than a continuation of Box Peak, what I would love is a lore dump on the world. From the curious year of 202, to the underground fortress, a fuller array of box mods, to the corporate intrigue around the 7 of 7 initiative. I just want to know more about the world. But maybe this is a case of “the more you know, the less interesting and magical it becomes.” You tease only exactly what we need to be aware of to tell a compelling story. That of a young boy who desperately wants to compete in peeking boxes, and the struggles he overcomes to do so. As always, congrats on everything and I can’t wait to see what’s next. L&R -E

Thank you for all your hard work, Kyle!

Parasitepaladin

I could see and hear "oh yeah baby, I got this" as I read it, and I got a good chuckle. Keep churning man, excited to see the end result 👍

YOU GOT THIS!!

Can't wait till you start working on the RPG
