Final Fantasy VII Remake Spoiler Mode Remake: Do You See the Means of Conveyance??

VIDEO: https://youtu.be/n6y82yLdzAA

Hey it's our SECOND Final Fantasy 7 Remake Spoiler Mode!  This time we're more or less sticking to just the events of the game itself.  So ready your violent expectations and join Michael Damiani, Ian Hinck, Michael Huber, and special guest Jason Wishnov to discuss the remake!

Final Fantasy VII Remake Spoiler Mode Remake: Do You See the Means of Conveyance??

Comments

My thoughts exactly. Or better yet, have huber on a solo FF7R analysis.

I personally enjoyed this Spoilercast more than the Max one. The first one was more an emotionally charged review with lots of theory-crafting (which to me can be fun but is really a waste of time when you do too much) while this one was more a critique, which is more analytical of the product itself. One can love something and still criticize it, because it's NOT a flawless masterpiece (and some people are too sensitive for that discussion). Jason, Ian and Damiani are all clearly extremely passionate and about FF7 and FF7R to the point where it seems Damiani is practically shouting for an hour (and that's great to see). Having a different discussion from game developer perspective like Jason's is interesting too. I would much rather have this sort of variety than another echo chamber where everyone loves everything.

Jones said the he and Brad will do one once Jones is done with it. Talked about it last Cup of Jones.

Is a third spoiler mode still coming?

Daniel Falcon

I wish Huber was in the first spoiler mode instead. He just wanted to talk about the story spoilers while the other guys are just reviewing the game and talking about things they dislike.

I think it just needed a bullet-point list of topics from the outset, and then they can talk about whatever they want. I think over-focus on the criticisms of the game got too prominent this time. That's really up to the individual people talking to address. You shouldn't make it dishonest, on the other hand. Also, ftr, I'm with Huber on the Chapter 15 part. As horrible as the cubemap texture was, I also had a genuine investment in going after Shinra, and the expanded section where you feel like a ragtag group breaking through the mold and heavily fortified border to their headquarters, with explosive bossfights, was a totally cool addition. It's filler but it perfectly tied into the primary narrative. This is one of the parts where the game felt "expanded" to me and not just padded.

Man, I guess I am biased cause VII was like my favorite game growing up but Aerial combat was really my only issue with the combat. But on another note i think it is tough to Spoiler Mode a game that is only a Fraction of an older game. I think if we are looking at these comments and watching something with Spoilers I think you should just put it all on the table. Everytime Damiani says i can't say this because it's an OG game or something referencing "Advent Children" or "Dirge" or "Beyond Crisis" I'd argue back that if someone doesn't want to know they won't be watching this they'd be playing the OG or consuming other FFVII content.

This spoiler mode was a huge let down. The conversation was extremely hard to listen to. Please rewatch this episode Damiani and see what problems it has as a piece of content.

Rosamune

Damiani, no one is going to be happy. Whether you over moderate or under moderate no one will be happy. Ask the panel before you record how they want the spoiler mode to go, then execute. Do what’s best for y’all.

Logan Young

For the third spoiler mode, how about you guys do this: - Go through each chapter of the game chronologically and ask each person in the spoiler mode their thoughts on things in each chapter - When you get to the last chapter you can give a warning that you're about to spoil the OG game and talk without restrictions - and as a personal request, don't have anymore guests. I just want to hear Jones, Huber, Bloodworth, Ben, Brad, and DON talk more about the game L&R

Nut Kon

Although I think the 1st spoiler mode was more enjoyable to listen to than this one, I thought this was still worth a listen. But please, no restrictions on spoilers for the OG game (or the other FF7-related content) when you have Jones on for the third one. Restrictions in this particular case are unnecessary.

Karl Williams

Yes, Cloud, a character from a Japanese game from the 90s, is asexual, and there will definitely be an opportunity to facilitate a lesbian relationship between Aerith and Tifa.

Sam Strajack

I do appreciate this spoiler mode, even if you guys had alot of problems with remake. Its understandable that not everyone will like this game. Lots of complaints that were brought up are totally valid, I guess they didn't ruin it for me as much as others. I have to agree that no talking vanilla FF7 spoilers was ridic on a spoiler mode. I always appreciate guests, and Jason is a great fresh outlook we normally don't get. I guess I am just bummed that you guys didn't like Remake as much as most of us.

* Excited Damiani air pressure hurts my ears... * Not spoiling/discussing OG FF7 is non-sense in a "Spoiler" video. => 👎

Thank You for doing this extra spoiler mode guys I loved it! While I by no means disliked the original spoiler mode and the trip down the rabbit hole of possibilities it presented, this one seemed far more balanced to me. Deep dives into combat flaws and music wins is beautiful. Jason was a fantastic addition and brought a different perspective to the whole thing that I didn't know I wanted. Two excellent guests for these spoiler modes and I hope this trend continues in others when appropriate. I do think you guys were a bit harsh on Tifa though. Personally I saw the persona she presents here as a bit of a front she puts up to hide her insecurity and doubts about Avalanche's methods while working as a barmaid. Cloud even calls her out a few times and she drops the facade, eg in chapter 3 when returning to the bar after side questing. Aerith overshadowing her though is absolutely by design and replicates the original perfectly. Highly recommend reading the full translated Ultimania interview for those who haven't as well, it points out all kinds of neat aspects such as cloud being mentally 16 when everyone else is early twenties or older, that I had not considered and further contextualizes his attitude and actions.

Seriously! I have to say if there is anything broken in the combat it's the way you can get locked out of doing anything as you character gets caught in a constant knockdown damaging loop where they can do from full health to dead just because you can't even get back on your feet for a minute straight.

Fun listen Allies! Thank you. A few comments from me to follow. 1) If you wanted to avoid spoiling a 23 year old game, you should have reserved the last 30 minutes or so for discussion on things involving all released content. Just an idea. 2) As for an open world in the follow on games. One reason I really think they will do it is because of the Bouncer effect. Like how the Bouncer was basically a tech demo for follow on Square games, I feel like FF15 was basically the same thing. They used that game to test out a more action oriented combat system that essentially evolved into what we got in FF7R. Same can be said for the open world in FF15. They had a chance to build it out and test it, so going forward they should be able to evolve that into an open world concept for FF7R+. 3) Lastly, I wanted to throw in a few things I hated in this game that I otherwise absolutely love. As in any game, I had being gated but systems having nothing to go with the core mechanics of the game, especially when they are as wonky as in FF7R. Namely, the stupid water pump shit at the end of the sewer segment as the final step was just impossible to time correctly. Same can be said for the simultaneous button press before the boss at the second reactor. Although it was an ode to the original, it was inexplicably sensitive to where I'd get one side on time and not the other at times. It just felt really broken. Finally, I hated the final motorcycle chance for making us fight the boss on the bike for a second god damned time. This was made way more irritating by the wonky camera and slow vehicle response. It just didn't even resemble something fun. I would have much rather ended up at the end and been able to fight on foot. (Bonus) Mine as well also throw love out for the combat system since some seem to hate on it. I love it. I love that if I was getting my ass beat or otherwise struggling, I couldn't get too mad because I always knew there was some strategy or technique that I hadn't figured out yet and I had no one to blame but myself. And as you guys said, it isn't a Souls game, you can expect to just not take damage or evade all attacks. You have to play by the design of the combat engine and the sooner you figure it out the better experience you'll have. I'm on Ch 16 Hard Mode now and I still pick up new little techniques every time I play. The combat has so much room to learn and experiment. Every weapon allows for different play styles, and the materia is both robust enough and limiting enough to really develop all kinds of different builds and rearrange things for different boss battles and enemies rather than brute forcing it in one single play style. For me I generally use elemental on both Cloud and Tifa and tailor the matching magic materia to the enemies in that zone using Cloud as a back up healer and part time black mage, relying on Triple Strike and Fira most often to end most battles before they start. With Tifa I focus on casting the static magic unaffected by magic stats like haste and barrier while focusing on being main DPS glass cannon style. Barret acts as a Paladin with mostly non magic healing with prayer and absorbing the group damage with his tanking abilities. Since he can attack anywhere with very little movement he can easily charge ATB to get out heals and with his Big Bertha he gains back MP real easily so he can burst heal when needed. There's just so much nuance and flexibility that combat never gets dull. I seriously just wish I could have a third Elemental materia and at least one more Magnify lol. Oh and tip for Flying enemies. Just stick to casting and using Barret or Aerith, and if you really want to get in there and do melee use Tifa as her air combo is much longer. It can be annoying, but I wouldn't say it's broken or needs to be nerfed in any way.

I'm new to patreon. How do I watch this on ps4?

To Ian, regarding the scene with Aerith and Marlene in the bar. We see a bit later that Aerith either has or gains the power to communicate thoughts/emotions through physical contact, i.e. with Red XIII in the lab. The scenario with Marlene is kinda similar, where Aerith is trying to earn her trust, so I think Aerith communicates to Marlene some of her knowledge/emotions (perhaps showing her images of her father?). Not really sure on the train graveyard. I *think* Marlene mentions playing there at some point/knowing about kids disappearing there, so maybe the ghosts are showing an image of something that happened? Anyways, thanks for being awesome!

Thank you for doing this guys, I really enjoyed the discussion. But as a request, please have og FF7 and compilation spoilers on the table for the next discussion with Jones. It really felt like limiting this spoiler mode to only FF7R contents hurt the discussion here. Also, I find the disappointment in how characters use expressions like "Huh? Huh!" to communicate with each other so interesting. This is definitely a cultural thing cause I live in middle east and we use "Huh" or "Hmmm" or "Huh?" to communicate with each other a lot haha. So it felt so natural to me when the characters did it in FF7R lol

Great stuff!

Here is my angry message for you allies!

Gigagash

I mostly enjoyed the spoilercast, but have to say I was disappointed that you guys avoided spoilers from the original game and the rest of the compilation of FF7 stuff, I think it really got in the way of the discussion, and defeats the purpose of a spoilercast. Not a knock against anyone - but the best spoilercast is when every participant comes equipped with all the knowledge possible about the game - or at least one or two people does - and everyone else knows enough, and are willing to learn everything from the experts, kinda like the first spoilercast

Arvin

I want to 2nd Audega....the Max spolier mode was terrific for what it was but I didn't get to hear Ben just talk about the game itself much. I loved everyone on here but I hope to hear more from Brad, Brandon and Ben. Please don't think you can talk about it too much. lol The spoiler mode with Max was deep and I loved it though.

ComboBreaker

Thank you for this. While I love Max and his streams, I had wished you talked more about the game itself in the first video, rather than just theorizing what's coming next. L&R <3

I felt so bad for damiani that no one corrected him lol

Gladiuswingzero

Jason was a phenomenal guest. Enjoyed his FF9 video with Ian and so many of his opinions were rock-solid to me and well-said. I agree with Damiani's reservations on Square building an open-world for the next parts. FF7 managed to create a phenomenal and fun illusion of an open world even if most people's paths through the game would be similar. However, it would be very costly in time and money for them to replicate that illusion for the modern day audience. I think we've seen aspects of the game - such as Chapter 14 which offer some ideas on how future installments will deliver exploration.

Tweaks they could make (enemies should have more response to basic attacks/aerial attack combos (like a tiny stagger so they don't just fly/move away) - enemy basic attacks shouldn't interrupt any action we do (other than a missed dodge) and vice versa. Camera needs to be zoomed out - camera is awful and gives you no visual information when fighting multiple groups of enemies or against bosses who fly/hover (the camera will be too close and low). The tracking on bosses enemy attacks is insane but I don't think it's something they'll change because this is an ARPG hybrid - you're meant to take damage. Also long enemy melee attack combos (Bahamut, Sephiroth etc) felt awful to fight because only Cloud could deal with it through Parry and Counterstance; the others get forced to block unavoidable damage. Formations and custom party settings are great ideas and they had this system in KH1 from decades ago (albeit badly implemented). Being able to tell party members to sit off and let your Active Player Character handle all the aggro would be great for allowing player predictability i.e. Cloud/Barrett hold aggro whilst the others wait for stagger/pressure. If you use certain materia combinations, the game can become more action intensive - Parry Materia with a LvL 3 Tifa (Unbridled Strength x2) turns her into a combo master, who can keep enemies stunlocked; generates ATB at a crazy rate, buffs stagger for the whole team and her speed enables her to dodge most attacks. Cloud is very much an Action character with the ability to interrupt attacks, fluid combo strings and the ability to parry on command using Triangle.

So according to Damiani FF XIII, a game Nomura didn't even write for, had the most Nomura ending 👀

Huber should be in 1st spoiler mode. This Spoiler Mode has a lot of misinformation.

Aite, Cynical Ian, Hyped Huber and an actual game developer. This gonna be good :D
