The Last of Us part II is my Game of the Year 2020. I believe this game did something in the narrative department together with the character interactions that it hasn’t be done before, at least at this scale. This and the fact that is almost perfect in every other department makes this my GOTY. This is more impressive for me by the fact that my favourite game of all time is Final Fantasy VII, since 1997 when it was released, and I loved the Remake, but I have to admit that this year TLOU2 was the better game and was amazing. Maybe FFVII Remake part 2 will be my game of the year when it is released. I hope so.

Cyberpunk 2077

Stepan Hakobyan

Hades baby, perfect gameplay loop, sick artstyle, sick music, charming characters, Love it all.

Luca Alberti

Resident evil 3!

13 sentinels

JDelValle21

I hope 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is at least nominated.

Blinker

It’s been playable for a year at least but came out of early access in 2020, Risk of Rain 2. Probably not GOTY but what an amazingly fun multiplayer rogue-like with a bunch of very different feeling main characters and abilities. The game just feels great to play, highly recommended game, would love to see the allies team up and run this game on stream. Cheers all.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps FOR MEEEEEEE

Hades and Doom Eternal are my top 2, so I went with Doom to give it a little more representation. Also loved Ghost (haven't finished yet, 30 hours in) and FF7 Remake. Shout out to Astros Playroom for being one of the most jolly games I've ever played.

Bokthand

The Last of Us 2.

Hades

Matt Lopez

Hades, by a Greek mile. I like TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima was awesome, and FFVII Remake was good. But Hades was by far my favorite of the year.

Jason Flood

Hades

Daniel Ribeiro

HADES... no game kept me playing for as long in 2020. Top notch music, top notch gameplay, great writing, superb voice acting. There is nothing this game falls short in. It's objectively fantastic.... you can not like the genre of game... but there is no doubting its quality.

Mitchell Collier

It's a tough choice for me between Hades and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is wild since I came into 2020 with absolute certainty that Animal Crossing was going to be my GOTY (it's still my #3 pick).

Cody Johnstone

Thank you for bringing that up! That was one of the most unique experiences I have had in gaming for sure.

Varun Kachhwaha

Wasteland 3

Scott Holdsworth

TLOU2 or Hades would be my 2 cents.

I finished RE3R over 8 times and had a blast with the game, but even I had forgotten about it until I read your comment :(

Ghost of Tsushima

Over 1,300 hours into Animal crossing, but I think Hades is my GOTY, though, I haven’t played this years PlayStation games

Ajax

Here is an unpopular opinion for your consideration: PER ASPERA :-)

Private Prinny

Ghost of Tsushima for me. I have to admit that I am bias because I love everything that is samurai's. I have to give some special mentions though. Trails of Cold Steel 4 - I spent the bulk of last year playing the Cold Steel series in it's entirety. I wish I could play the other games in the series but I don't have access to them at the moment. Anyway, I had a blast with this series. The cast of characters really stuck to me and in some ways made me feel like I felt when playing Mass Effect 2. I grew attached to a lot of characters and didn't want to finish the game because that would be the end. Among Us - I don't know if this counts since it came out in 2018, but it's been getting a lot shine. Anyway, I've been watching people play this game and have been enjoying what I've been seeing. When I'm not playing some game I'm watching some stream of this or Uno Flip.

BigBoss313

Wasteland 3... It's also the only new game I played.

Kif

While I haven't played many games for this year yet (I am so behind on my backlog - just playing Spiderman 2018 now!), one I couldn't miss was FFVII Remake - and for sure deserves a nomination - if not a win. Surprising on all fronts on how it blew most people's expectations away with the nostalgic factor in keeping with how much it expanded on all scenes and gameplay).

Graeme Hill

OOH!! This was one heck of a year. I had no idea that all my Iceborne time was this year, but it released on PC on January 9th!! :O

Zkarts

I think it's quite a boon to Sony that most of the suggestions I see floating around a lot are PlayStation exclusives. As I don't have a PlayStation (I'll fix that this gen!) I'm actually having a pretty hard time coming up with any good games I played this year, even though I did play a LOT xD

Zkarts

This is a tough one since 2020 had some really amazing games. Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy VII Remake were particularly surprising for me, since I didn't expect to loved them as much as I did. But there is something to be said about a series not only maintaining its quality but improving itself everytime, and that's why ultimately I think Yakuza 7 is my GOTY. Not only they tried to change up the gameplay (and succeeded in a lot of ways) but the new cast of characters are simply amazing. I think Ichiban in particular is one of my favorite protagonists in a long time.

Doom Eternal, hands down. Nothing made me feel better about all the shit that was going on in the world like ripping demons apart. It’s so good.

Russell Garrett

I think my vote has to go for Animal Crossing New Horizons

Too many people sleeping on Bugsnax. So so good

Joshua Leemon

That said I really enjoyed watching all the games streamed and Ben's P5Royal were some of my favorites. Gris is a beautiful game but I didn't finish it yet. Pikman 3 was very charming but I only played the demo (6 times!)

JessieBlu

I’m sure it will get plenty of it from Ben, Brad and Hubey

Joshua Leemon

I couldn’t decide between FF7R, LoU2, Hades, Astros Playroom and Bugsnax. But then I played Kentucky Route Zero and that’s easily my #1

Joshua Leemon

There's only one game I could legitimately put since I haven't spent much time at all playing any others. With almost 1,200 hours in ACNH, when I look back on 2020, that game will be remembered as what got me through.

JessieBlu

The last of us 2

I can't decide on one game and now I understand a fraction of your suffering during the deliberation

KIT

It has to be Animal Crossing, at least in the sense of what I consider to be GOTY--the literal game of the year. Not the *best* game of the year, but the game that defines what the year was about and was able to dominate into the zeitgeist in such a way that nobody else can imagine. Here's a game that came out right when the pandemic was in full force, with everybody staying home. ACNH gave people a way to connect with each other, dominated social media, and still has a huge player base even with the light at the end of the tunnel approaching in the dumpster fire that was 2020. Again, not the *best* game of the year (which is Hades), but *game of the year*.

Andy Schreiner

The Last of Us 2. It's the only game that put me on pins and needles. I also didn't want to press square during a certain boss battle. I wanted the boss to win. I played Ghost of Tsushima for hours on end, but during the campaign, I got bored since it was open world. I took day long breaks when going through it. I love combat, its the best thing ever. MP. more please. But just the campaign was a bit dry. FF7, my first reaction was this is GOTY. But thinking about it, LoU hit more emotions. I'm not a fan of the final boss fight, but overall great game.

NotYourMom

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

My vote has to go to the FF VII remake because everyone's expectations were so ridiculously high for that game that frankly it's incredible that it managed to meet and even exceed most of those expectations. But I think Animal Crossing and Among us deserve a shout just for the massive impact they have had even beyond the 'gamers' demographic.

Bjorn Vrancken

Final Fantasy VII Remake cos' they did the impossible, but Half-Life: Alyx is criminally underrated (and arguably inaccessible due to the VR rig).

I hadn't had as much FUN playing a game as I did when I with Final Fantasy VII Remake. And I say that as someone who only ever played parts of the original. But games like Hades and Ghost of Tsushima definitely blew me away this year.

Diego

1)Final Fantasy VII Remake 2)Ghosts Of Tsushima 3)Half-Life Alyx

Link

Initially I thought Hades, which is incredibly deserving. The game that I can't get out of my head though is Cyberpunk 2077.

Eric J

I hope Half-Life: Alyx will get enough votes to be nominated, but GotY is Cyberpunk 2077.

Alexander Zyryanov

Much as I'm loving my playthrough of Yakuza 7 (got to it late), my answer is absolutely Hades!

Sasquatch

Its Final Fantasy VII Remake

Marco Gorgar

Next time it'd be easier (from both a user perspective, and your own processing) for it to be a drop-down list of common entrants + an "other" field to catch the exceptions.

Andrew Chalmers

I looked back at all the games I played this year and Streets of Rage 4 is the one I had the most fun.

My mind is telling me TLOU2... but my BODY! My BODY! is telling me Ghost of Tsushima. Definitely had way more fun with Ghost, but TLOUII was just an experience unlike any other from the games I've played this year, so I've gotta go with that one.

Gotta give my vote to Hades. L&R

TLoU2. ggez

David Sobiegraj

I know I'm probably in the minority and 'kind of cheating', but Death Stranding (STEAM version).

Eric M

FF7R for me but I really enjoyed TLOU2

Ivan Ndahiro

Toss up between FF7R and TLOU2

Please don't start that here...

Varun Kachhwaha

I figured other people will take care of the big boys. So i voted re3r. It seems to be getting over looked everywhere which is a shame cause it's real damn good.

Gabriel Roy

Hades for the art, gameplay and bonds.

Slippi is clearly the correct choice, but I doubt mods qualify, so I'm torn between Half-Life Alyx and Doom Eternal. I expect both to be underrated. Hmmmmmmm.

Brainfreeze

Gotta be the last of us

I love both Hades and Demon Souls, but I believe Hades deserves it more for being original.

I was most invested and engaged with FF7R emotionally. I was addicted to Hades. Masterclass design and execution. Ghost of Tsushima is a magic act that performs technical wizardry that I cannot explain.

Justin Greene

My heart is caught between Maneater and Bugsnax HahaSweat

ZatVunDoot

Like..... Hades is absolutely the best gaming experience I've had in 2020. But Animal Crossing defined 2020 from a gaming culture and memories standpoint... Definitely torn here.

Ghosts of Tsushima is my pick but Jackbox party pack 7 may have brought me the most joy of any game last year.

Cody Spencer

Let's be honest here, anything is a better choice than TLOU2

Star Tsurugi

FF7R

Nelo Nero

FF7R on top of all else in the game. The honey bee inn alone brought me so much enjoyment Nothing else comes close

Matthew Palling

Honestly it may be nostalgia talking but FFVII remake gets the vote for me. Totally unfair I know and GoT and last of us 2 were both great but FFVII remake was just the best

Yakuza like a dragon ftw 🥰

Megan Linart

FFVIIR!!

Ed Cooper

FF7 remake. L&R!

Cabbagelad

The Doom Eternal clubhouse will be a desolate place, but it will be intimate, and we will be blasting the soundtrack and having a great fucking time. +1 vote for Doom Eternal.

Daryl Rodriguez

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Sara Knite

Such a brilliant game, maybe my favourite of all time. It does a raise a question though in that how much of a game needs to be new for it to qualify for this award? If we give it to that are we mainly giving it to the original Persona 5 or the Royal parts?

Varun Kachhwaha

Yeah, I think that's how it goes.

Varun Kachhwaha

How did you know? You must be a prophet.

Varun Kachhwaha

Persona 5 Royal

Doom Eternal

Msap

My GOTY is 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Although that game might not be for everyone, I think it's great. I haven't touched Yakuza yet since I am waiting on the PS5 patch, otherwise that might have been a contender since I love the series. I also noticed there was one sentence which still said 2019 in the poll.

MrMette

Last of Us 2. dont @ me

Chris

Since a lot of ppl will be voting Hades, I need to nominate 13 Sentinels

Thales Augusto

My personal game of the year was The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV, its niche and probably won't get a lot of love but this game was the culmination of many games before it since the PSP era. Bringing things to a satisfying conclusion as well a teasing what is to come next. A wonderful JRPG series from Falcom, check it out! My vote for this will be Yakuza Like a Dragon, my number 2 or the year and more likely to win this contest! Iciban rules!!!

Matthew Borg

Wrong date in the form. L&R

Miles Morales, first platinum I ever actually completed and still would have loved more.

My brain says The Last of Us Part 2 but my heart says Final Fantasy VII remake 💙

Nominated Yakuza: Like A Dragon. I love everyone in the party, how they make you connect with them through the game and with the bond system. These characters are all unique and well written. They have distincitive personalities, goals, backstories that endear me to them. Liking the turn based combat system, I can see why it was needed in this game. The way this game makes you connect with the party wouldn't be possible with the previous combat systems of Yakuza. And of course, the mainstays of the Yakuza franchise remains top notch in this as well. I know it's not going to win, this year has been amazing. But I hope it gets some recognition.

Varun Kachhwaha

This probably probably goes without saying but we only get to nominate a single potential entrant, right?

Happy Gaming

Can’t wait for [game I picked for GOTY] to win GOTY 😎

Miles Morales is a 10/10 easy the best game
