Cup of Jones - January 25, 2021

We met. We fought. We laughed. We cried. We picked our 2020 Awards, including our Game of the Year. Our highlights video is finished and I finished assembling our eight-and-a-half-hour Deliberations video late last night. Since this is what has been on my mind all weekend, I want to talk about the imperfect process of picking awards for each category, from cute and funny to big and stressful. Having just gone through the process, and then watched it all again, there were a few things I noticed that are helpful to remember when the guilt starts creeping up after not having played every game made in 2020.

Howdy Jones! Can I get your opinion of that discord survey Sofia gave you? Would you say it was helpful or insightful? And while it was a drop in the bucket if your total patreon, around 200 isn't a small number. In any case, it was real cool and nice of her to do! And it was a pleasure helping her out with it in the small way that I could.

Will you guys be reacting to Blizzcon in 3 weeks?

Mr Jones, You gave a stirring editorial on trailers but can I ask you a very important question? Trailers are only a piece of the marketing push, can you share your thoughts on how you would market a specific game from start to finish? As an example, would you describe how you would plan the marketing for Bloodbourne 2? Since you are in charge of the marketing and the success of the product's sales are there any tricks or shady backdoor deals you would pull to ensure success? Would you accept brand deals or include celebrity cameos? I believe you have a valuable perspective and if you have insight what we as consumers should be aware of with marketing, could you share your thoughts? Respectfully, Morgan Mohalla

Good Morning Jones, I really enjoyed Ian's Bloodborne unboxing video and I look forward to when you are all back in the studio together eventually. It would be interesting if there could be a video representation of how long you were away... Oh, I thought of one! Pandemic Hair Growth measurements! With the recent comments over the different hair style Ben is trying, due to not being able to get it cut due to Covid lockdowns, and Hubers beard and hair, I think it would be funny to do a quick video similar to the "How tall are all the Allies" with the subject being the lengths of everyone's head and facial hair, (changes we do and don't see on Zoom or Discord) with before and after "mug shot" photos or fade transitions. I know you rocked the beard for several weeks and let your hair grow, so you could include that too, though Amanda has been doing a wonderful job keeping it cut and stylish for you these past several months. Blood of course looks identical, though no one can see how long the hair has gotten in the back since it's been past his shoulders for years now. And I can even imagine Ian inserting a comical "after" picture to represent that Bosman is gone now. Do you think you would consider mentioning it to the other Allies and see if they would be interested? =) Thanks for reading my comment. L&R Jessie Blu

Little feedback. I would like you and the other allies to stop using the word "Exclusive" if possible when referring to Xbox first party titles. A game that is coming to two totally different platforms cannot be an Xbox exclusive. If anything game like Flight Simulator is still PC exclusive even though it's coming to Xbox later this year. Same goes for Playstation if they start to release their first party titles on the PC, they are no longer Playstation Exclusives. Sorry for being little nit picky, but i hope you understand.

Heya Jones, Oh, wow, yeah. I mean, I didn't expect you to be here but that's okay. I can work with this. But if Easy Allies were about to be broken up with, would they prefer it happen in a park covered with trees, at a zoo that's got chimpanzees, or a circus ring with a flying trapeze?

Hey Brandon, Love your guy's work and have been watching since the GT days, L&R forever! Please excuse me if my wording is poor, but here is my question: Recently I tried to point out some of the what I feel are unfair/unnecessary dissing towards the allies on the subreddit, however this led to a backfire that has kind of left me a bit disheartened by the situation. I know that the allies often look through various sources of discussion on them whether it be reddit, twitter, youtube comments and the like, so I wanted to ask how do you and the other allies feel about sources of negative discussion (the subreddit in particular) effect the overall success of the allies? Do you use such places for actual feedback or is it something you guys see as a sort of lost cause to win over? Again, thank you for all that you do. L&R Alan

Happy February Jonsey! First off, can I get a patented Brandon Jones “happy birthday” on today, the eve of my birthday? (Thanks in advanced!) Second, I think it’s time to consider getting your patreon Allies involved in the weekly bets. I am not a web developer so my knowledge is limited, but wouldn’t it be awesome if on the release of the Friday podcast that patrons $5 and up could go to a site where they would put in their guesses for the bets and compete with other patrons? For bets like guessing how long a credit sequence is, the top 10% of closest bets would get a point. Points would be credited to a user’s patreon handle, and points would accumulate over the weeks with quarterly resets to encourage other users to up their pledges to $5 at several points in the year. As for the rewards: top ten scores get to submit their own final word to be read on the podcast. You could also take a minute midway through the quarter to update us on the leaderboard. Anyway, easy for me to suggest because I’m a web dev dummy, but I think I speak for all of us when I say we want to get involved with this hot betting action. Hi Jones, were there any games mentioned during the GOTY deliberations that made you want to pick them up? (Thanks for all the hard work on both the deliberations and the edited video!)

The Canipa Effect

Any chance of the deliberations being posted on the patreon podcast feed? I may be the only one but it is much easier for me to consume long form discussions as a podcast vs a video, thanks.

Hey Brandon Seeing most of you praising and choosing HL:Alyx for your GOTY made me very happy, mainly because it got snubbed at the Game Awards and none of my friends shared my enthusiasm for the game. My question: Since so many of you enjoyed it so much how about a Spoiler Mode for it? You all seem very passionate about the game and an 'unhinged' discussion about all the surprising moments could be very fun.

Hello Brandon. I’ve noticed that in Game of the Year video red text was pixelated and white text wasn’t. I know that there’s a reason for that, but despite thinking a lot about it, I don’t get it. Can you please explain?

Alexander Zyryanov

Jones, what did you chose at the end of GoTsu

Ibrahim Sozer

A personal question but could you tell us more about your Welsh heritage please? You mentioned it a few cups back. I'd love to hear more about it and how you found out. I'm a proud North Walien and would love to hear more from you and any other Welsh allies!

Problem is I listen on my Apple Watch while on a run, so this is not possible to do I guess I could download and that might work? But honest I have no idea how to do that and do not have access to a PC unless it’s something I can do on my iPhone I appreciate the work they do and understand the reasons he mentioned. It would be awesome if at all possible but his reasoning made a ton of sense and I understand I am probably in a very small minority. But I would never say no if they offered it up, maybe even at a higher tier.

Jaan Ibrahim

Hey BJ, How dare you mention discussing trailers in editorials but not on Trailer Jones. I will be writing to my local congressmen. Thanks

Ibrahim Sozer

People can listen to twitch audio only which is podcast form and get youtube premium if you want stuff turned into podcasts. If you don't like that download youtube to mp3.

Hi Brandon I hope you are having a lovely day. I just want you to know when you said "8 and a half hours of deliberations" my ears perked up. Yes! The more the merrier :) It might be time to install Just Cause 4 and finally try playing through some of that as I listen to allies argue about best games of 2020 :) Question: Last year you did a saying goodbye to games of 2019 that you are not gonna play anymore editorial that I personally really enjoyed watching/listening to. So I was wondering if you'll do something similar this year. Personal Question: Have you watched the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer? If so, what did you think of it? Personally I thought something felt off about it, but I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it was the good guy/bad guy narrative that they had in it or it might've been the way the trailer was cut that didn't sit well with me (even though I like the idea behind Godzilla and Kong having an epic battle). Any thoughts on that?

Hey Mr. Jones! With all things that happened on the Friday before last regarding Xbox Live Gold’s price drama and Vicarious Visions being folded into Blizzard, I felt it would have been a perfect time to try a “Breaking News” for the second time. But when nothing came, it inspired me to ask you: Was the GOTY prep and it being imminent the reason why there wasn’t another one of these breakouts? If so, I can totally understand everyone being super busy, but I felt a 20-ish minute video between two Allies could have been great. That said, I can now see both of these as part of your “Also this week” segment if you decided it’s not worthy of being a major topic for how out of date both are (Especially since you won’t see this until AFTER the podcast that would have this news is published). Regardless, thanks again for reading, a very belated Happy Birthday to you, and have a wonderful rest of your day! Cheers! QUESTION: Was GOTY prep and it being imminent a major reason why there wasn’t a second “Breaking News” video to discuss the news regarding both the Xbox Live Gold’s price drama and Vicarious Visions being folded into Blizzard, or was Breaking News just a one-time thing that just isn’t worth doing anymore for how specific circumstances must be to make them?
