When designing, I either make the basic sketches myself or use a generator to get a feel for looks and style. Actually most of the time I do both.
Sometimes ideas don 't make the final cut - for example Morrigan was originally going to be far more brutal, scarred up and rough looking. That character eventually became Neph, and Morrigan moved into another role I had imagined for her.
The two humans Gavin and Marta, represent something super interesting i'll go into more detail in the game - but since humanity went from say a 2029 society to all of a sudden being gifted thousands of advanced fleet ships. They didn't have time to get up to speed, they knew manning them with 50 year old veterans might be a bad idea - because of old habits manning submarines, carriers etc. So they thought best to pick the most intelligent, capable - but young people; so they'd grow into the role. With a minimal elderly people on the ship to manage guidance.
