Talking Simpsons - The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show Live With Bill Oakley

For the third time, we take our show on the road to Portland alongside Bill Oakley, former Simpsons showrunner and Steamed Hams Society boss. Recorded live on October 2, 2024, at Kelly's Olympian in Portland, OR!

We all dissect a favorite ep from Bill's time on the series, The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show. Bill has many fun memories and digressions about how this episode happened, with tales of the show you'll only hear on this extra-large live podcast. How is Poochie like Mac Tonight & Cousin Oliver combined? Who was their greatest enemy in the '90s Simpsons fan sites? Learn all that here, and then check out our previous live shows with Bill Oakley, both our 2018 edition, as well as our 2023 one!

Bill is in Austin this week for the annual Fake Moe’s, I will try to stop by and annoy him with Arby’s history again

The short-lived San Francisco Giants mascot 'Crazy Crab' was an ugly parody of bad mascots designed to draw the ire of the fans and distract from the teams terrible performance. Poochie could have served a similar role in a show with waning popularity. Roger Meyers knew audiences were hungry to see this obnoxious character die but rather than write him off, they should have taunted the audience by bringing him back each week only to butcher him in new and inventive ways. Poochie was unintentionally the perfect addition to the Itchy and Scratchy show.

These hidden deleted scenes arent on youtube or even your video a few years ago where you looked at deleted scenes. You got some of the hidden deleted scenes for season 8 but not all of them. Would you be able to post these to youtube or on the patreon as a video or something? I fear these are going to become lost media at some point which would be a shame. Would be nice if they were on Disney+ but alas

Hey thanks!

I love my Serve bot plushie and Amaterasu pin btw. Thanks for being awesome.

It was driving me crazy though how he didn't point out that "McBain" is misspelled plain in view in that same shot, which is the more glaring error for me

Fantastic episode, guys! Loved Bill's insights and you have a great chemistry with him!

I was the one that yelled "We love you, Bill!", cheered for the death of the Flintstones, and suggested Sonic. In other words, I'm now banned from the venue.

This may be one of the best shows you’ve recorded. The inside perspective gave me a new appreciation for the show and set things in a context I’d never considered. Bravo!

I can honestly say that was the best episode of Talkley & Sampson I've ever heard.

Vance Jericho

The joke about not being broadcast live because it strains the animators' wrists is one of my favorites. Both setup and punchline are so absurd, and it's delivered so seriously, it's just perfect.

I think a crown should have lowered from the ceiling on to Henry's head after asking about the character being off model. You are the king of the Simpsons nerds, sir.

I wish everyone could've seen the look on Bill's face when they showed Poochie in The Simpsons Game. Calculon's "I'm not familiar with the type of thing I'm seeing" springs to mind

Always a joy to hear from Bill and this is probably the episode he oversaw with Josh most deserving of this format. Since Bill didn't say anything about it, I was always curious if The Christmas Ape joke was a riff on A Christmas Story since it's only theatrical sequel arrived in 1994 and was basically Ralphie goes to summer camp (it was released as It Runs in the Family but changed for home video to My Summer Story). It had such a small and low profile release that I could see the writer's not even being aware of it. It's also possible there have been other Christmas stories with summer camp follow-ups, though I can't recall any off the top of my head.

As always, a great show. Your live shows have always been the highlight/capper to a great retro gaming expo weekend, when you’ve been able to host them. I’ve been to all three of the Kelly’s Olympian shows and they’re just a blast. I’m so happy Bill is game to come back for them because he makes what would be a fantastic show anyway just that much better. Here’s hoping he’s down for next year too. 👍🏼
