Floral Portrait WIP 🌻 + visual breakdown with drawing tips! ✏️✨

Happy Monday everyone!! I hope you all had a restful weekend :) 🧡

Yesterday I started working on coloring this floral portrait and I wanted to show you the progress so far along with a little visual breakdown of the ideation process! 🥰

So here’s a little outline of the thought process I have while I’m working :) Whenever I work on a drawing, I like to have one main reference of a real person to base my drawing on for the pose, hair, skin tone etc; and sometimes I also like to have an artwork nearby to gather inspiration for colors or lighting schemes! In this case, I’m feeling really inspired by the colors and rim light in one of @bellhenge’s paintings 😌 I’m not sure if they have an Instagram, but you can find them on Twitter! 🧡

A fun exercise to practice if you want to experiment with creating a design concept is to find three reference photos to use for inspiration: one photo of a real person to base your pose on, then find an artwork to inspire a few colors in your drawing or the lighting concept, and then find a reference of some kind of object to add into the drawing (in this case I’m using flowers!) 🌻

It’s a really fun exercise to do if you want to practice combining references 🥰 The key is to gather inspiration from the images rather than copy them, so just having them up on your computer to glance at occasionally while you work! ✏️

Anywho I’ve never done a visual breakdown like this before but let me know if you’d like to see more of these in the future! 🙈 And stay tuned for another post I’ll be sharing soon about what I’m working on this week for you guys ✏️✨

Love,

Lydia 💌

Very insightful tip 💜 I’ve used multiple references for drawing, but not for color. I’m looking forward to trying that. Thanks Lydia
