Hi again & happy first day of June! 🥰🤍
Earlier this morning I shared a little sneak-peek of my most recent sculpture study with you guys, and I wanted to start this little newsletter with some quick art tips I learned from that drawing! ✏️

I‘ve been getting all my references of sculptures from Pinterest, and I made a board of them which you can see part of below :) Many of the sculpture photos have great lighting which is perfect for studies, but you’ll notice that all of them are black and white. I really enjoy drawing the grayscale values like I’ve done in previous studies, but this time I wanted to experiment with adding some color :)

So if I wanted to add some color to a sculpture drawing, I realized it would be a little difficult to figure out the hues based only on a grayscale reference. But while I was sketching, I had an idea! 💭

I imported my reference photo onto the canvas and used Procreate’s Gradient Map effect to adjust the overall color scheme! You might wonder, why not just adjust the colors with color balance or curves? That’s something you can do too (and it works great) but gradient maps is cool because there are a variety of filters to choose from and you can adjust the colors really easily! 🥰

Eventually I adjusted the color scheme of the reference to look like this, using only Gradient Maps :) I love how it shows me where all the hues and colors would go with an unusual color palette like this! Otherwise, it would be really hard to figure out how to paint with colors like these 🙈

You can see I didn’t follow the colors exactly, but I liked having a colorful reference next to my drawing to use for inspiration for the purple hues :) For a future sculpture drawing, I want to try painting the exact colors for practice! 😍

This technique works great for adjusting the overall color scheme of a reference to fit your preferences more and it can really shift the mood in an easy way, which I love :) Here I’m using color balance instead of gradient maps, which is good for fine-tweaking the colors! 🌸
Anywho, that’s a little tip I wanted to share with you guys!! :) In other news, stay tuned for a process video of that sculpture drawing coming this week, and also a process video for my Wonder Woman drawing that I’m currently working on! I started the sketch of her in the tutorial video I posted a couple days ago and wanted to color her 🥰 I’ll be coloring all the other fan arts from that video as well so stay tuned for those! ✨
I’m also soooo happy you guys have been enjoying the tutorial!! 😍 Click here to watch it if you haven’t yet and we’ll study how to draw stylized fan art together✨
I can’t wait to dive into a new month with you guys 🤍 Your support truly means the world and I’m so happy you’re here with me on this little art journey ☺️ Let’s have a fun month together! 🌼
Love,
Lydia 💌
