[Development] Back to Bill's Bedroom~!!!

Hey y’all,

Today, I want to show some of the work I’ve been doing for the last few weeks for Paizuri University! I’ve been revisiting the first background we ever made, Bill's Bedroom, which is part of the first scene "The Mysterious Girl at Night".

Here's the original background for those who haven't been to Bill's Apartment for a while.

Buka and I have been talking a lot about what we can do to make everything look better. We want to keep the same feeling in the background as the original while taking many of the lessons we’ve learned from our previous visual novels to make improvements.

I originally created all the backgrounds in Maya, which we used to generate different layers that we then composited and painted over, adding colors and extra details to the scene.

Now, I’m using Blender which gives us a lot of new stuff to play with and lets me preview the results while I work on it.

It’s been nice to work with modern tools, since the version of Maya I’m using is like, a decade old. Even with the learning curve in Blender, making everything look pretty has been a lot easier.

I’ve also started using premade models, to flesh out the scenes to add extra details while speeding things up. Adding these means we don’t have to paint in major details afterward which is great!

Once I render the results from Blender, I then use a bunch of other tools, to help create different effects, and then combine them in Clip Studio Paint for a final polish.

There are still things to add and tweak, but what do you think so far?

It’s the first background, so there is still lots to experiment with as we work through all of them, but we’re super excited by the results we have so far.
