Buffy The Vampire Slayer 5x16 | The Body

My reaction to Buffy Season 5 Episode 16 "The Body".

Comments

I am actually using Anya's monologue in an audition next week. It is just the best speech.

Malinda McAteer

This is my fave reaction from you so far. Real emotion and real reaction.

Mykhel Anghelo

Anya's speech always ruins me and I've watched this episode about a billion times. This episode is amazing. It shows how each character is experiencing the different stages of grief. This episode as hard as it is to watch is cinematic gold.

I relate to Willow the most. When my grandmother died, I just felt numb. When it was time for the funeral, I suddenly realized I didn't have anything to wear, so I went on this insane taxi ride. We stopped at a clothing store to buy a suit, then a shoe store, and finally a flower shop. I couldn't really afford these things, but I wasn't thinking about that. When we got to the church, I broke down and cried through the ceremony and when people tried to talk to me and for most of the family gathering afterwards. This episode is a tough first-time watch, but now it's cathartic to cry along with reactors. I rarely cry, but "The Body" is like the perfect controlled setting to let out some pent-up emotion.

Uh … welp … 😓

The Body is not typical of other TV shows where a major character dies. Usually we see at least one of two events in those shows. Either the death of the character itself or the funeral. In this episode we got neither of those. Instead, what we see is the direct and immediate impact of Joyce's death to those closest to her. The logistics of what to do with the dead body once all hope is lost. Telling other family members. Deciding what comes next. The surreal and off balance feelings you feel when you're in that initial state of shock. Like Dawn's teacher says, this episode is all about "the negative space" around the death of Buffy's mom. Still to this day one of the best episodes of television dealing with such a tragic event.

Every time I watch thi,s I cry like Sarah Paulson in AHS season 6, loud ugly cry

Back in the day, my high school friend wanted to see what the hype was all about around Buffy and this turned out to be the first episode she watched. She didn't appreciate it. Such a bleak tragedy. Beautiful art can go over peoples heads though.

Fauxindigo

Yeah every time I thought I was done crying another character would break me 😫

And can we just take a moment to give major props to Kristine Sutherland (Joyce actress) for just how well she plays a body. That shit isn't easy, at least not easy to look convincing, and she absolutely nailed it. I always feel like she doesn't get enough credit for her performance in this episode.

Claire Eyles

That was considerate of you

Abby

Also, as others have already said, this is just an incredibly well done piece of television. This is my equal number one best Buffy epsidode, alongside Hush. It's just one I enjoy re-watching, the other I don't. It still easily tops the list for me though.

I see we're at the funny aneurysm point of the show . I'm just about to watch the reaction, and I don't want to go into too much detail on behind the scenes stuff in case of inadvertent spoilers (I'll wait until the next episode for that), but remember a while back when I said to take note of the statue that Joyce touches when she goes to talk to Angel about his relationship with Buffy in season 3? Go back and look at that statue, and then compare it to the picture that Dawn draws in class. Not sure if it was done on purpose, but the likeness between the two is uncanny.

This episode and Sarah in particular should have won an emmy! Anya's speech is the part that broke me, and the fact that later in the hospital she says 'I Wish joyce didn't die' the only time she's ever 'Wished' :(

There is so much detail in this episode. I hope I catch the live stream discussion. I wanted to warn you to watch these 2 episodes after work and not before but I didnt want to ruin your experience of the effect of it coming out of left field. It was so shocking when this aired.

Oh man this was definitely a bad day to be dry 😭😭 hope you’re in a state with dispensaries!

Definitely an episode that’s one of the best pieces of media I’ve ever experienced and still so hard to just sit and watch.. I watched the entire show as it aired and waiting a week for this episode was brutal, I refused to believe that Joyce was dead.. finally sat down to watch this one when it aired and had my entire insides ripped out

Aurro Eronaile

I can’t wait to watch this. One of the best episodes of tv ever written. It felt so raw and real. This episode is the first time apiece of media made me sob uncontrollably.
