ULULA
“Ulula” means “Howling” in Italian.
Ulula is Fumetti (Italian for comic book) character from the golden-age of erotic-horror (1970s and 80s), which featured Monstrous anti-heroines and lots of sex and violence. These books were also known for their immaculately painted photo-realistic covers by notable artists like Emanuele Taglietti, who is considered the god-father of Fumetti cover art. Ulula appeared in 75 comic magazines and told the stories of Ulla, a top-model; who on a full moon, would become a werewolf. The interior art was in black & white and drawn in the bronze age style of American comics with amazing inking and sexy female characters. Probably the best of these artists is Leone Frollo.
I fell in love with this sub-genre of European comics; however, I haven’t read any of them, because they are all in Italian. I’ve seen a lot of the pages and could more or less figure it out, but the art is what captivated me. I may or may not have said so before, but I’ve never been heavily into horror as a genre, be it comics or movies. I can appreciate them and I do enjoy them, but I’ve always steered closer to fantasy and science fiction. My favorite genre is Sword & Sorcery, which has elements of horror with monsters and the supernatural. However, it’s the Halloween season, the season of the witch and I can’t help but dabble in the arcane arts of horror this time of year.
Here is my homage to those awesome Ulula covers by Taglietti. I will post another on Thursday.
