My travel audio gear

For those interested what audio equipment I took on our holidays, I kept it rather modest and simple.

I have just the Tribit MaxSound Plus as portable speaker, anything bigger would have been overkill. I like the Tribit because of its neutral tuning and cheap price, in case it brakes it won’t be a big loss and I can always buy a new one.

I use the Lypertek Tevi with the Soundcore Liberty 2 Pro tips. The tips from Earfun Free also sound good but don’t fit into the charging case that well. I like the Lypertek Tevi because it sounds quite neutral and the charging case has no self discharging like most others. I can leave it unused for months and it will still have some charge left. I never updated the firmware though as I heard rumours that the sound becomes worse afterwards. I am not sure if all current units are already updated and if there is a way to downgrade again.

I also took the AKG K361 with me as it’s pretty sturdy and won’t brake when just tossed into some backpack. I can listen with it in bed without disturbing anyone and I can use it for monitoring with my audio recorder.

Tell me about tour travel gear. Do you take your entire DAC/Amp stack with you?

Mostly for my commutes (or at least when that was a thing): M-Audio HDH50 Etymotic ER2SE with a Bluetooth receiver (several, actually, in case they run out of juice). I used to use Beyerdynamic Custom Street, but ever since the original pads fell apart, I've had trouble finding replacement pads that would offer comparable isolation while maintaining decent fidelity. :-/

I use a Fiio M9 with Fiio FH5. Both small but verry effective.

who, me ...

My travel equipment is rather low budget: an Etymotic ER3XR and a Beyerdynamic DT911 from the 1990s on a Topping NX4 DSD.

I also just purchased the Maxsound Plus from your reviews and have been loving it. I don’t think I saw it in any of your videos but you can actually tilt it upwards and it balances perfectly to get a more upward firing sound if you need that depending on placement. I also have minirig 3 and minirig mini 2 which sound great but left me wanting stereo sound and waterproofing. Hope you enjoy your holiday ✌🏻

Who did the Mh1 mod?

I use the Lypertek Tevi, also with original firmware, haven't updated. According to one review after the update "the bass is boosted and the upper-mids and highs are way less elevated." https://www.scarbir.com/tws/lypertek-tevi-review My guess is they boosted the bass to appeal more to the general public who probably expect/want a more bassy sound. I'll definitely be keeping the original firmware in that case!

I always carried the maxsound plus in my backpack and recently i replaced that for 2 stormbox micro or 2 xsound go if i need more battery life. For tws earbuds i use the tribit flybuds 1 and flybuds nc because they are just really practical in use and cheap to replace if lost or broken, but i also carry my er2se and fiio btr5 for when im in the mood for more serious listening.

If I visit my dad in Vienna I always take my Marshall stockwell 2 with me. It looks really funny in the x-ray at the airport security checkpoint. As headphones I use the apple airpods.

Last year summer i took my dockin speaker and tribit headphones, although most used was the speaker actually in the car it had some powerfull sound indeed. But now i replaced it for stockwell 2 its even my daily driver on the go because of the 'even' response even if won't be as powerfull listning experience is better for me.

In past I used JBL Flip 4 for travelling, now I use Vifa City.

The Tribit is the portable king. However, I usually take the Minirig 3 in stereo with me. And as a headphone I take the Beoplay H4, although it’s probably not as tough and rugged as the AKG.

Hmm, for travel, I prefer in-ears for the convenience. And for me, it's the Etymotic ER2XR with the Redstone ES100 or Sony MH1 w/MMCX mod if not Etymotic. And for wireless, it's the Jaybird X3, as they now have a stable connection on my device and are usable, I've been eyeing the Lypertek Tevi but I've just stuck with my X3s. And if I'm able to take an over-ear, it's either the Creative Aurvana SE or Earfun Wave. I don't really use speakers much, as I just have the Soundcore Motion Plus

And as for headphones, my favorite pair is IMR Acoustics R2 Aten from drop. That pieso-ceramic driver delivers awesome highs, while everything else is done by basically a massive dynamic driver . You can tune the sound with additional nozzles and filters. Also these are open back iems and while I do have questions regarding their frequency resolve, overall these do sound great. For closed-backs I have FLC 8n, providing frequency response adjustment as well.

I'm usually carrying my QLS QA360 LE player, which I picked for its neutrality, that's not loosing any "musicality". It is almost close to a good $300-$400 desktop setup and basically it's the best player on CS4398 chip, together with legendary Colorful Colorfly C4pro.

The Tribit Maxsound Plus really is an amazing speaker. This is what i take travelling too! :-D

I think I prefer the Tribit over the Minirig Mini soundwise

My one must-have travel audio gear is the minirig mini...the size is perfect for traveling...
