2022-10-23 05:58:25 +0000 UTCOne of the core themes of the series is "what is evil" and Ainz definitely leans that way from a human perspective, but from the perspective of his people he's a kind and caring ruler. This arc is a great example of "Perspective" as well. We see Ainz from the perspective of the Lizardfolk instead of from his Guardians mostly Ainz runs more on pragmatism than good or evil. He cares only about Nazarick and his people and acts for their benefit/protection/knowledge. He saved Carne village in season 1 to test his power, he sent Gazef out to fight the Theocracy instead of doing it himself to test their strength first so he and his wasn't at risk. He becomes Momon to gather information on the world, as adventuring is good for that. He helps people as Momon for his own gain or the gain of Nazarick. This season he's just doing the ruler stuff, these are pragmatic tests of Nazaricks capabilities, as well as the Guardians abilities to learn and grow mentally instead of physically. To adapt. As for the ruling with fear yes, he was the conqueror, thus his rule was established with fear. Though the goal was never to rule at all, they were simply going to wipe them out and use them for experimenting with creating undead. However Cocytus showed Ainz the growth he was hoping for by asking to spare them and attempt to rule. Demiurge suggested trying it without fear to see if they could conquer and then establish a benevolent dictatorship. So the goal in the end is not to rule with fear indefinitely but to earn their trust and loyalty, but it started as a slaughter, so yeah it starts in fear! Yet again this is interesting for Ainz because; his Guardians wanted it, and it serves as a beneficial experiment towards the future of Nazarick. All in all most everything Momongo/Ainz does is one of; a test, a benefit to himself, a benefit to Nazarick as a whole, a benefit to his Guardians, a boon granted to his Guardians, to protect him or his own. It's all purely pragmatic and does not pay mind to whether he is being good/evil. That's a good thing to keep in mind. Also, we are the baddies in this as well, all the NPC's are evil and since Ainz is acting in their interest we often act in evil ways xD
