They didn't think about Lapis as a trapped person, or they would (surely?) have set her free. They didn't think of her as a corrupted gem monster, or they would have bubbled the mirror. They thought of her as a useful tool. And their faces when Steven tells them it's a person are horrified but also kind of guilty. It wasn't hard to befriend the mirror, or Centipeedle. They didn't try.
