2023-08-04 12:09:18 +0000 UTCIt's rather interesting to me to see the ways in which they translated all the Hogwarts-inspired stuff into a more American idiom. Headmaster to Principal is a gimme, but since we don't really have house systems in our schools here, they went for "tracks." (Tracking in US schools has more to do with separating out the advanced learners from the slower learners than with subject matter, but it's a term that American kids would find recognizable and familiar as a "school thing," so I do understand the logic behind the decision.) The cultural translation is particularly interesting to me because I don't really think it was necessary. The Harry Potter books were *huge* over here - had they called the coven tracks "houses," their kid audience would be sure to understand that. But it seems they really wanted to Americanize the language of their magic school, even while still making it a very blatant and open Hogwarts homage. Curious.
