Yeah, I think if you put yourself in their shoes then it's easy to see why they wouldn't be welcoming him with open arms. We as viewers totally get it because we've seen Zuko's progression but those guys haven't.

Based on most reactions I've seen, you guys are in a surprising minority i think of people who actually GET where the Gaang is coming from. Too many are baffled and frustrated with them right off the bat for turning Zuko away, but anyone is kidding themselves if they think they could casually brush off the trauma of the season 2 finale, and Zuko's role in all that. I love how you rightly envisioned Zuko ultimately being an ally from the start; I know it's so rewarding to see after so much development. :)

Essentially a highly specialized type of firebending that uses that forehead tattoo to focus chi and make violent explosions at highly concentrated points. He blew himself up because Sokka essentially gave him a concussion and he couldn't properly focus anymore.
