STEVEN UNIVERSE FUTURE Episode 15 & 16 REACTION (FULL/EARLY) - VIP

Comments

I think Greg’s parents were probably, at best, restrictive, self-centered parents who had no care for what Greg wanted and needed as his own individual person. That active rejection of Greg as he is would create any kind of trauma for any child and from the sounds of it, they were extreme. They wouldn’t even open letters he wrote to them after he changed his name to “Universe”. All of this led Greg to adopt the totally carefree lifestyle and embrace it until the end of time. It was all a survival response to his prison-like upbringing. At worst, his parents were abusive. However, Greg himself went extreme the other way with Steven. He gave Steven too much freedom and autonomy and “support” (not the support a parent needs to provide) that Steven ended up pretty much raising himself. Loving your child is not just having affection and showing genuine happy feelings (which is important too). It’s also doing the hard thing and being the “bad guy” and making sure you set up a safe and reasonably regimented environment to give a child a sense of safety and actual safety so they can be free to learn on their own and make mistakes that won’t scar them for life (as far as any parent can control). Luckily, the Gems learned to at least provide Steven with what he needed in terms of basic needs as did Greg (I suspect Greg monetarily supported Steven even before he was wealthy). The most important thing and their saving grace is that the four of them loved Steven and he knows it and he reciprocates it. Not only that, but they genuinely can’t get enough of him and like being around him just as he truly is and accept for who he truly is. That in of itself makes up for a lot and prevented Steven from being more of a mess. However, their inability to provide the actual structure Steven needed as a human child made him become their caretaker over the course of the show and he internalized all of that to where he became a parent to not only the four of them but to many members of Beach City as well. Then add on Greg really taking a step back with all the “magic stuff” when he could have been a father the whole time and put his foot down more often (and not just in extreme situations like when Pearl wanted to take Steven into space). Steven, like all children, need rules, schedules, stability, and feelings of safety. He could have seen the doctor more regularly, gone to school, partaken in more human activity, socialized with human children his age outside of Connie, etc. Some things were unavoidable due to the Cluster and the Diamonds, but Greg’s extremely lax parenting ended up creating a lot of issues for Steven as we see now.

Thoughts and instincts and emotions can lead you in all kinds of directions. What feels bad shouldn’t always be avoided and what feels good shouldn’t always be indulged. Moderation in all things. And maybe don’t continue living in a van after you’ve made millions of dollars and are approaching your 50’s. Greg did overcorrect his childhood juuuuuuuust a tad.

Man the Greg episode always makes me so sad. Context makes me think Greg’s parents were borderline abusive? At the very least they were controlling to a toxic degree. I feel like that unopened stack of letters and Greg’s graduation photo specifically say a lot. Forcing their son to do stuff like wrestling, restricting access to music, and cutting all his hair off? It’s screaming super conservative narcissism to me. Why would they open letters from their son who didn’t act the way they wanted him to in life? Steven of course wouldn’t know any of that, Greg didn’t outright say anything to that extent, but the puzzle pieces are there to me. Steven’s response makes sense there given what he’s going through and what he knows. Back to Jasper, that episode had me shaken. Steven did what his mother refused to do and it’s definitely messing him up. One can’t deny that getting all that pent up anger out was probably good to a certain degree, BUT jasper wasn’t the right person unfortunately to help that along. There’s something to be said about how you might need to balance the talk therapy with the physical therapy. I don’t see anything inherently wrong with him training with those powers! It’s just that Steven and Jasper fed into the negative aspects and made it this cycle where Steven was then at a point to lose control of himself, poor kid. I got chills when I first saw all her shards. I really liked that they broke up her stripes, post shattering and docked one of her horns. Neat detail to me.

Steven is also not being a turd, he is a kid with ptsd from being violated and almost murdered his entire life.

The underlying sad part with Greg's parents is that the letters Greg sent his parents were never opened. Despite all his feeling about them Greg still wanted to talk to them and reconnect but they ignored him after he left. While in comparison the Diamonds, Mostly blue wanted nothing more then to have pink back.

Hi, I never commented but I love your reactions so I want to add my 2 cents. Steven wanted a normal upbringing because someone woud have cared for him and protected him like an actual child. He was injured, almost killed and hunted from a young age. He saw war and all kinds of messed up stuff. From his perspective, it would have been nice if someone had restricted him a little, therefore shielding him. Instead, he had to play therapist and guide to the adults in his life causing him to carry the burden mostly by himself. As an abuse survivor, the idea that "trauma makes you who you are" is just not true. Trauma and mental illness just make you worse at the things you actually want to do. That's why he was mad at Greg. He never protected him from all of this and then said it was better.

David Mocken

Well i get what Steven means by wanting a more normal upbringing its still mean that he's blaming Greg and saying his parents were right when he never knew them. Well its true Greg could and should have done more to help steven growing up like education and health wise, Greg did the best he could and just wanted steven to be able to choose his own path that he never got from his parents. Not to mention its ironic that steven says he's parents couldn't be as bad as roses family, aka the diamonds were when they and Greg's parents were about the same in regards to parenting. They both had decided what They would grow up to be and wouldn't allow them to make their own choices or be different. Ultimately both Greg and Pink couldn't stand living as they were and so when they got inspired to be someone new, Greg from music given by a friend and Pink by Earth when pearl showed her it they both ran away from their families. Greg DeMayo became Greg Universe while Pink Diamond became Rose Quartz, setting the whole show in motion.
