I'm way behind, but glad you're watching FMAB , and pleasantly surprised that you hadn't been spoiled for this infamous episode. :) The manga and anime creators had the civil wars and genocides in eastern Europe in mind - IIRC Bosnia and Serbia were at war at the time - and it definitely made for a more grounded and somber feel.
