The Himmel and Frieren love story is even more tragic when you remember that Elves don't have romantic feelings. It's not that she was oblivious to his feelings toward her, it's that she couldn't know due to her biology.

It was bratty but she’s a kid

i think everyone that is rewatching this was waiting for this one. Beautiful reaction as always. Fern is kind of a bit of an anime trope to be honest, the Tsundere, but it's applied a bit more realistically here. We know about her upbringing, for instance, explaining her relatively narrow view on life but also she's more self aware than your typical Tsundere. Sein has a very positive influence here.

I definitely feel like this is the episode where we really find out for sure how Himmel felt about Frieren. Totally tear up at the ring flashback every time I watch it.

When it comes to Fern, I feel like a lot of her side comments feel harsher in this dub version than they do in the sub. In anime sometimes the “straight man” characters make quick little side comments in response to some unusual hijinks going on and they’re supposed to represent the audience’s thoughts and are comedic. For example, little things when she says “that’s rich coming from you” when Frieren says something ironic are supposed to be more comedic rather than harsh. Fern is one of my favorite characters and even though her attitude towards Stark is sometimes annoying, I still think their relationship is cute and meant to be more like banter. Edit: I don’t mean to sound patronizing because I know that what I explained also exists in other media but I had a hard time with anime at first because things do get lost in translation

This one gets me every time.

Sein deserved that shin kicking. You never forget a girl’s birthday 😤

The clock tower in the background symbolizing the time standing between Frieren and Himmel is such a great detail

In regard to Fern and her attitude, you have to remember she is a 16 year old girl who's formative years were shaped by Heiter and Frieren in relative isolation while being laser focused on learning enough to be a proper mage before Heiter died. It's not like she's had a lot of opportunity to develop proper social skills.

Ferdy

This episode is just filled with so many beautiful tiny details. While the ring is a big focus in this episode, we’ve actually seen it before in episode 1. During Himmel’s funeral, we see Frieren holding it while she cries over him. Another little detail I love is that even though Frieren says she has a ring with the same design, they’re slightly different! The lotus on Fern’s bracelet is opened, implying love blooming, whereas the lotus in Frieren’s ring is closed, because it never got the chance to fully bloom. It’s heartbreaking but so beautiful.
