DC: The Sorcerer System Chapter 9

Chapter 9: Dungeon

The two women felt their makeup flying off at the speed Lucien shot out of the location. He forgot that humans were fragile and thus had to stabilize the speed in the middle of the flight.

He was not used to carrying others and that was a little problematic for him.

White Rabbit huffed vigorously, still shaking from the terrifying speed of travel. "That… that was insane." She said, unable to breathe properly.

However it was not the same for the other woman. Harley seemed ecstatic at the adventure.

"Can we… Try it again!" She asked excitedly which made Rabbit look at her in concern.

"Harley… Do you have a death wish? I felt my lungs bursting because of the intensity." Rabbit looked at Lucien and frowned. "Thank you for that."

Lucien shrugged and answered without thinking. "It's not my fault that you are weak."

This little comment irked Rabbit because she was by no means weak. However after seeing Lucien manhandle Green Lantern, she decided to remain quiet.

Lucien turned to look at Harley. "And I am sorry, Harley. But I think this is all I can do for you today."

Rabbit raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

Lucien sighed. "I have to leave, there is something that I need to look into."

{{Item acquired 'Dungeon Entry Key ×1'}}

{{Dungeon Key: Grants access to the ancient universe of Dungeons and Dragons. Can be used anytime and anywhere.

Note: The Dungeon world is heavily modified from the original to match your world's difficulty. Skills and powers gained in the Dungeon will be multiple times stronger in the real world.

Death in the Dungeon world locks the Dungeon for an entire week.

Time Flow in the Dungeon world is 24:1}}

What… Did you do, father?

{{Enter the Dungeon Now?}}

The question rang inside my head.

This was the final piece of the system that father talked about and never would have I thought that the quest for it would be triggered by something so random.

But what exactly did you do, father?

Taking a deep breath, I said yes.

{{Relocating User to the Dungeon}}

{{Non-Users of the System cannot see, hear or enter the Dungeon.}}

{{Relocating in 5}}

I do believe whatever he did, won't be simple. And this is definitely related to his time, space, matter and reality manipulative powers.

{{4}}

It did say something about the ancient universe of Dungeons and Dragons, which means it's probably an already existing universe.

{{3}}

But it was also apparently changed by my father, which makes me wonder if it's a good change or a bad change.

{{2}}

I guess, I will have to check for myself.

{{1}}

And with a blind flashing light, I felt myself traversing through time and space.

But when I expected to find myself in a dungeon, I found myself in a dark room instead.

[Laguage: You have mastery over the Demon language, Undercommon and Demon Sign Language and can choose one additional language to auto-master.]

[[Choose Additional Language Now: Y/N]]

This was… a lot to process. And I had no knowledge for half of the things that were going on.

However...

It's best to assess the situation before mastering the language.

[Wizard]

Looks like my system is integrating with the dungeon’s system. After all, father did say that the system will go through changes.

And the only one of these classes that I know is the sorcerer. I do not know the mechanics of the rest, so I guess sorcerer it is?

What… Are these?

{{In this universe, there are different schools of magic that are responsible for creation and maintenance of spells. And every spell falls under one of those schools.

There are eight schools of magic— Conjuration, Necromancy, Evocation, Abjuration, Transmutation, Divination, Enchantment, Illusion.}}

Interesting…

{{The symbols— V, S, M refer to the actions required to cast a certain spell.

Some spells require the user to chant a spell, which is Verbal— V.

Some spells require the person to do some physical gestures, which is Somatic— S.

And others require some sort of Materials to cast, which is the M.

While some require only one of these actions, others require two of the actions and some require all three.}}

[Choose four Cantrips]

Well…

I have no clue what those spells do. And there doesn't seem to be any way to get information on those spells either. Which I believe is because of father. He does love to put me in sticky situations in the name of training.

But cantrips mean tricks so these cannot be massively powerful spells despite the name.

Huh? I can only choose based on their names thanks to him.

[[Spell: Fire Bolt]]

[Level: Cantrip]

[Casting Time: 1 Action]

[Range/Area: 120 ft]

[Components: V, S]

[Duration: Instantaneous]

[School: Evocation]

[Attack/Save: Ranged]

[Damage/Effect: Fire]

[You hurl a mote of fire at a creature or object within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 5% fire damage. A flammable object hit by this spell ignites if it isn't being worn or carried.

This spell's damage increases by 10% when you reach 5th level, 15% by 11th level, and 25% by 17th level.]

[Damage Taken: Charisma × 2 + fire damage]

This doesn’t sound that strong but remembering that spells will be stronger outside the dungeon gives me a bit of hope.

[[Spell: Gust]]

[Level: Cantrip]

[Casting Time: 1 Action]

[Range/Area: 30 ft]

[Components: V, S]

[Duration: Instantaneous]

[School: Transmutation]

[Attack/Save: STR Save]

[Damage/Effect: Control]

[You seize the air and compel it to create an effect that must follow the world setting.]

[Damage Taken: None]

I can think of countless ways to use Gust but not sure about the effects.

[[Spell: Minor Illusion]]

[Level: Cantrip]

[Casting Time: 1 Action]

[Range/Area: 80 ft (13 cubic ft)]

[Components: S, M]

[Duration: 1 Min]

[School: Illusion]

[Attack/Save: None]

[Damage/Effect: Control]

[You create a sound or an image of an object within range that lasts for the duration. The illusion also ends if you dismiss it as an action or cast this spell again.

If you create a sound, its volume can range from a whisper to a scream. It can be your voice, someone else's voice, a lion's roar, a beating of drums, or any other sound you choose. The sound continues unabated throughout the duration, or you can make discrete sounds at different times before the spell ends.

If you create an image of an object— such as a chair, muddy footprints, or a small chest— it must be no larger than a 13-foot cube. The image can't create sound, light, smell, or any other sensory effect. Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it.

If a creature uses its action to examine the sound or image, the creature can determine that it is an illusion with a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC. If a creature discerns the illusion for what it is, the illusion becomes faint to the creature.]

[Required M: A bit of Fleece]

[Damage Taken: None]

This is too restrictive but I can still work with it.

[[Spell: Shape Water]]

[Level: Cantrip]

[Casting Time: 1 Action]

[Range/Area: 80 ft (13 cubic ft)]

[Components: S]

[Duration: Instantaneous]

[School: Transmutation]

[Attack/Save: None]

[Damage/Effect: Control]

[You choose an area of water that you can see within range and that fits within a 13-foot cube. You manipulate it in one of the following ways:

You instantaneously move or otherwise change the flow of the water as you direct, up to 13 feet in any direction. This movement doesn’t have enough force to cause damage.

You cause the water to form into simple shapes and animate at your direction while also being able to change the water’s color or opacity.

You can freeze the water, provided that there are no creatures in it. The water unfreezes in 3 hours.

If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have no more than two of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time, and you can dismiss such an effect as an action.]

So many restrictions… But thankfully these are just tricks and not actual attack spells. So, these should be good enough for now.

For now is the keyword.

[[Spell: Absorb Elements]]

[Level: 1st]

[Casting Time: 1 Reaction]

[Range/Area: Self]

[Components: S]

[Duration: 1 Round]

[School: Abjuration]

[Attack/Save: None]

[Damage/Effect: Acid(...)]

[Damage Taken: None]

[The spell captures some of the incoming energy, lessening its effect on you and storing it for your next melee attack. You have resistance to the triggering damage type until the start of your next turn. Also, the first time you hit with a melee attack on your next turn, the target takes an extra 15% damage of the triggering type, and the spell ends.]

[[Spell: Shield]]

[Level: 1st]

[Casting Time: 1 Reaction]

[Range/Area: Self]

[Components: V, S]

[Duration: 1 Round]

[School: Abjuration]

[Attack/Save: None]

[Damage/Effect: Warding]

[Damage Taken: None]

[An invisible barrier of magical force appears and protects you. Until the start of your next turn, you have a +50% defense against all attacks, and you take no damage from spells casted by beings that are weaker than you.]

This is kind of broken. Damn.

[4 Spell Points Received]

[Spell Points: An additional feature that lets you create a temporary spell slot or modify your spell.

The temporary slot vanishes after taking a long break and the points required are different for each levelled Slot.]

{{Note: A 9th level spell consumes 13 spell points and you receive a maximum of 133 spell points by level 20 by ethical methods.

However, you cannot consume all your spell points to cast multiple level 9 spells. Even with all the spell points, you can only cast 1 level 6, 1 level 7, 1 level 8 and 1 level 9 spell every few hours. But for level 5 and below spells, you can cast multiple.

The spell points recover after taking a long rest.}}

{{Additional information: You can sacrifice one of your existing slots to convert into spell points.

And this also resets once you take a long break.}}

My brain hurts…

[[Choose Starting Equipment]]

[(a) a light crossbow and 20 bolts or (b) any simple weapon]

[(a) a component pouch or (b) an arcane focus]

[(a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack]

[Two Daggers Obtained]

A light crossbow can be good but it has limited arrows. But it's useless to pick swords as I am a sorcerer and already got daggers for close combat melee damage.

[Light Crossbow Obtained]

[20 Crossbow Bolts Obtained]

It's a long range weapon and I need long range. And for the next selection option, I had no idea so let’s go with a random choice.

"Select Arcane Focus."

[Arcane Focus Obtained: Choose Type]

{{Note: It can be a jewellery.}}

Oh, we can choose a type?

"Ring"

[Arcane Focus Ring Obtained]

[Arcane Focus: As long as a spell doesn't consume the material and only requires that presence of the said material, the usage of an Arcane Focus can remove the need to carry that material around.]

This is nice.

As for the packs…

[Dungeoneer's Pack (12 gp). Includes a backpack, a crowbar, a hammer, 10 pitons, 10 torches, a tinderbox, 10 days of rations, and a waterskin. The pack also has 50 feet of hempen rope strapped to the side of it.]

[Explorer's Pack (10 gp). Includes a backpack, a bedroll, a mess kit, a tinderbox, 10 torches, 10 days of rations, and a waterskin. The pack also has 50 feet of hempen rope strapped to the side of it.]

{{Note: GP stands for Gold Piece and is a currency of the Dungeons and Dragons universe.}}

I know what to choose.

[Dungeoneer's Pack Obtained]

Great.

[Choose Two Skills]

[Arcana]

[Deception]

[Insight]

[Intimidation]

[Persuasion]

[Religion]

Arcana sounds good and since I am a Cambion, let's go with deception.

['Arcana' Skill Obtained]

[Your Intelligence (Arcana) check measures your ability to recall lore about spells, magic items, eldritch symbols, magical traditions, the planes of existence, and the inhabitants of those planes]

['Deception' Skill Obtained]

[Your Charisma (Deception) check determines whether you can convincingly hide the truth, either verbally or through your actions. This deception can encompass everything from misleading others through ambiguity to telling outright lies. Typical situations include trying to fast-talk a guard, con a merchant, earn money through gambling, pass yourself off in a disguise, dull someone's suspicions with false assurances, or maintain a straight face while telling a blatant lie.]

Good enough.

[[Roll Stats]]

You are telling me… My stats will depend on some dice roll?

What?

[[Stats Rolling]]

Four six-sided dice appeared before my eyes, making me confused. However, the system decided to help me clear them.

{{Rule: All four dice will be rolled together and since every dice will land showing a number between one to six, the smallest of the four will be excluded and the rest of the scores from the three dice will be added to get the starting stat.

This will be done every time for Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma.}}

I believe father explained these terms to me in a simpler way.

'Strength is the ability to crush a tomato.'

'Dexterity is the ability to dodge a tomato.'

'Constitution is the ability to eat a bad tomato.'

'Intelligence is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.'

'Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.'

'And finally Charisma is the ability to sell a tomato based fruit salad.'

[[Rolling]]

The four dice rolled as I stared at them hopefully.

I would love to get a high number but even if it is low, it won't matter much as my build is magic focused and I can dump the lower value in strength.

Staring at them, my heart dropped as the first die rolled a 2.

But my mood lifted when I saw the second die landing on a 4. The third one landed on a 6 and the fourth one on a 4 again.

A total of 16 but since two is the lowest, it will be 14.

It's still a decently high stat but I would wait before assigning.

[1st Roll: 14 Stat Points]

[[Rolling Again]]

The second time it landed on 3, 5, 5 and 4.

[[2nd Roll: 14]]

14 again.

[[Rolling again]]

This time I got lucky.

A bit too lucky.

First die rolled a 5, second die rolled a 6, third die rolled a 6 and the final one rolled a 3.

[[3rd Roll: 17]]

[[Rolling Again]]

2, 2, 6, 5.

A bad roll.

[[4th Roll: 13]]

[[Rolling Again]]

My heart bled as I stared gobsmacked at the 5th roll.

2, 2, 3, 3.

[[5th Roll: 8]]

[[Rolling Again]]

I wanted to close my eyes for this turn. It could be horrible like the last roll but I had a slight glimmer of hope that it wouldn't.

The first die rolled a 1 and I felt my heart sinking to the deepest pit.

The second die rolled a 4 and that didn't make me much happier either.

But as the 3rd die rolled, my hopes rose.

It landed on a perfect 6.

And now everything was upon the final die.

It rolled for a bit longer than usual but the result made the wait worth it.

It landed on another 6.

[[6th Roll: 16]]

[[Assign Stats]]

I instantly put the highest stat in Charisma. A cambion was known for being charismatic and deceptive. The more the charisma the higher the chance to deceive.

[Charisma: 17]

And the second most important stat was the constitution in my opinion. Being able to withstand situations was a must.

[Constitution: 16]

Strength was the least important stat so the 8 went there. Since a sorcerer rarely relied on physical strength.

[Strength: 8]

Wisdom and Intelligence were valuable and they demanded a higher value.

The two 14 points went there.

[Intelligence: 14]

[Wisdom: 14]

And the 13 went to Dexterity.

[Dexterity: 13]

[[Stat Assignment Successful]]

[[Roll Bonuses: Y/N]]

Bonus roll? Sounds good!

[Bonus' rolls for specific stats. You cannot assign them manually.]

Oh… A bit of a bummer. But any additional benefit is good. Taking a deep breath, I chose yes.

[Rolling Bonuses]

{{Dice: 20 Faced}}

{{Rule: The value 10, which is the side with the ten on it is considered the neutral value. Which means if you roll a 10, you get no bonus. It's a +0.

But if you roll an even number above 10, you get an additional point.

For rolling 12, you get +1, for 14 it's +2, for 16 it is +3, for 18 it is +4 and for 20 it is +5.

However for every odd number that you roll below 10, it's a negative addition.

For rolling a 9 you get -1, for 7 it's -2, -3 for 5, -4 for 3 and -5 for 1.}}

Wait… There is negative bonus? What? Why?

Without giving me a second to breathe, the die started to roll.

[[Rolling for Strength]]

After rolling for a solid 15 seconds, the die landed on a 17.

Which gives the same value as 16.

[+3 Bonus Stat for Strength]

[[Rolling for Dexterity]]

This was not a lucky roll.

[[-2 Bonus Stat for Dexterity]]

[[Rolling for Constitution]]

A dangerous roll.

I stared intently at the die and thankfully it rolled a strong 19.

[[+4 Bonus Stat for Constitution]]

The next two were not great.

[-1 Bonus Stat for Intelligence]

[+1 Bonus Stat for Wisdom]

But what took a hit was my Charisma.

[-2 Bonus Stat for Charisma]

That hurts but still the most important values are above 10.

Showing final stats.

[[Strength: 11 (8+3)]]

[[Constitution: 20 (16+4)]]

[[Dexterity: 11 {13+(-2)}]]

[[Intelligence: 13 {14+(-1)}]]

[[Wisdom: 15 (14+1)]]

[[Charisma: 16 {16 +(2) +(-2)}]

{{Max points for every stat at level 1 is 20.}}

The initial +2 from the Cambion race saved my Charisma but not getting the full benefit still hurts.

However there is a +20% bonus upon level up and that will help in the long run.

So, there is no reason to assign the extra 1 point with the +10% bonus to Charisma.

Constitution is at 20 so it won't increase anymore at this level.

[+1 Stat Point Added to Strength.]

[+10% Bonus will be applied to Strength each level up.]

[Bonus Distribution Successful]

So, this is where my story starts huh?

With a smile on my face, I calmly walked through the portal— entering a world unknown.

[Congratulations, You have arrived at your destination]

And just like that… began the journey to the dungeon.
