I do feel, though, that better delineation must be made in our culture between schleppy beardos and hipster beardos. Schleppy beardos have beards because shaving is just too much work. Hipster beardos have beards because of some weird ironic construct having to do with classic manifestations of masculinity and an intellectual affinity for the Rousseau-type back-to-the-land ethos.
