Welcome to Hamilton Redux (Nov. 2019)

I forgot to post this one to Patreon and skipped right to December.  That was silly!  This is another background asset for the car wash comic that I put to use with a new Phoebe pic to create a fake tourism ad.

Of note is the fact that right after I ran this incentive, the Tiger-Cats got into the playoffs and almost won the Grey Cup, thus ruining my joke.  But true to form, they lost again.  Their primary virtue is consistency.

The irony is that much of Hamilton is beautiful - more beautiful (IMHO) than boring, suburban Burlington. You just don't get to see any of the beautiful parts from the QEW, and 90% of people's only exposure to the city is that awful drive-by view from the QEW. I mean, it's a tough town, no word of a lie, but it's fantastically varied in what it has to offer. Still, harborfront is a blight on the face of the planet.

Don't forget the steel manufacturing! Giving Hamilton that metally-fragrance.

Ahh, it’s the Stelco plant right beside the highway that I think makes the biggest impression. I was transferred to Ontario from Edmonton, Alberta back in the mid-80s, and I vividly remember looking over at the flaring stacks and thinking “Wow, it’s the opening scene from Blade Runner!” I’ve driven by Hamilton thousands of times and think that every time I drive by. There’s a weird division between leafy rich Burlington on one side of the highway, and the industrial dystopia of Hamilton on the other side. And, of course the Luppino and Musitano families are two of the “cement shoes” families in the area. I’ve lived in this province for 35 years, and still find it weirdly jarring, coming upon this dense industrial city in the midst of all the greenery. The waterfalls are cool, though. I’ve hiked the Bruce Trail from Niagara-on-the-Lake (Mile Zéro) to north of Fergus (where my bad knees finally said ENOUGH) and, aside from some of the trails running beside busy streets, there are some beautiful parks along the escarpment and cool waterfalls in the middle of nowhere. It’s too bad that stuff isn’t beside the highway, and the industrial stuff miles from the road, like every other city. I’ve sailed a sailboat into Hamilton Harbour and to the right is beautiful Burlington and to the left is...Blade Runner. Love the strip! Lance
