Hey Tyler I don’t know if you have heard of a little movie called “Valentine” with David Boreanaz and a pretty decent cast who I would love to name but can’t seem to recall any others. You will definitely recognize some of the other actors. It’s pretty on point considering it’s Valentines! 🤗 Have a merry valentine 🌼

Very good stand-alone. I even think it is a very STRONG episode (see what I did there?). As the show (and the Scooby Gang) is getting older, the writers are getting better at linking the stand alone episodes to the main story arc (at least thematically). I really love this one as it reunited in a single episode the humor (even silliness) of the show and very serious issues like school shooting and teen suicide. It is a thin line to walk on and BTVS does it very well. I appreciated your comments a lot on this one and I fully agree with your opinion on school shootings and who we should put the blame on (not only on the perpetrators). A very good song that illustrates that is Kinslayer by Nightwish which is about Columbine massacre. I wasn't expecting on an analysis of Buffy's pyjamas but it was surprisingly accurate. Now I am eager to see of what you will do in the next Buffy season in another episode where Buffy quirky (to say the least) pyjamas make an appearance^^ And finally, I love how Cordelia is literally saying what she is thinking. It is hilarious.

Love that you caught the parallels between the class lesson on Othello and the Buffy-Faith-Angel situation. Faith is definitely meant to be seen as Buffy’s “dark half”, or “shadow self”. In fact, in the first episode that Wesley appears in, Cordelia comes into the library looking for Freud and Jung books. Freud is of course referring to the repressed sexual urges by Wesley (as well as Buffy/Angel) but also Jung is well known for his philosophy of the shadow self, representing the repressed desires and urges of our “darker half”. On another note, I couldn’t tell from your reaction if you understood the little joke that Oz always goes straight to the Obituary section (“obits”) in the school paper. That may be a weird American abbreviation. Anyway, of course Sunnydale High would have its own obit section!

Yup it’s that episode. There are a lot of deliberate choices (like saturation in some important scenes) that were made for the story and to add some rawness to the episode that are completely removed in the remastering. Also not sure anymore but the season 4 finale is probably impacted now I think of it. The videography is special there too.

There are few pleasures in life quite as unique as getting high and listening to you create a spontaneous cow-representing-the-oppression-of-the-working-class metaphor from nowhere. :)

Epic, thank you!

@Tyler Hulu has the og version. Just double checked. I know Hulu isn't available in the UK So you would need a VPN to use it. But it's doable. Angel is on there too, and you're getting close to where the show splits into Buffy and Angel.

Tanya TMS

I thought the Hulu version wasn't the remastered. I know I have my DVD collection that is my go to. --- doing a quick test to see for you Tyler. ---- And yes, it's the remastered... let me check Hulu.

Tanya TMS

I was going to comment with exactly what you said here, Crystal. The phenomenon of mass school shootings had been around long before this episode, but the biggest one in the collective consciousness of everyone was UT (uni, sniper) and Kent State (Ohio's military killing peaceful, unarmed, Vietnam student protestors). There had been a couple that did NOT have a wide media impact in 1998. But Columbine is the mass school shooting that really made the public aware that there was a problem. This episode is still so relevant in the societal message it puts out. And it's just heartbreaking that here in the states kids live in a world where they have to practice mass shooter drills like it's no big deal. It is a big deal. But it wasn't the first full on massacre to answer your question. First school massacre was in 1764. I don't know where they draw the line between mass shooting/massacre in regards to our shootings over here. For instance the 1764 massacre only resulted in 11 deaths, but the UT one (1966) resulted in 16 and it's considered a mass shooting. It's humbling and means a lot that people from other countries care so much about it. I know the US isn't the only country where school shootings occur, but we do have the worst. So thank you for your emotional support and expertise on this matter.

Tanya TMS

Not just national news, I remember it being on the news here in Australia too, so it was international news. I don't know if it was the first time it was a full on massacre as opposed to a one on one disagreement/drive by/etc, but I can't imagine the PTSD that literally an entire generation of Americans are coping with now, I'm so sorry and wish it hadn't snowballed into what it is today. I bet no one had "bulletproof school backpacks" on their bingo card 30 years ago :-(

Crystal Racklyeft

The headline reminds me of a a joke I read years ago that always makes me laugh: "What's worse, ignorance of apathy?" "I don't know and I don't care."

Crystal Racklyeft

Now I'm curious lol. Which one? Ohhhh is it THAT one. Good lord, what butchering did the remaster do?? Such a phenomenal episode if it's the one I'm thinking of

Crystal Racklyeft

Ooooh I really hope you get the original version by season 5 at the latest! There is one episode there that cannot be seen with the remastering. Absolutely not.

😂😂

It's a smart writing decision in this episode to have Buffy unable to read a vampire's mind because a vampire casts no reflection, but the much funnier explanation is that Angel just has no thoughts, head empty

Lucy

I also take mash potatoes very seriously and appreciate the respect 😆.

Dutchkel

Yes, I am Buffy's age so I was a senior in HS when Columbine happened. It was a big deal and put a big damper on the joy of being the last class to graduate in that millenium (and now I feel ancient).

Dutchkel

I was in high school when this aired. Even before Columbine, I remember whenever there was a school shooting, it was huge national news and we all talked about it in school. They were "small" events, not like you see now. Not usually with semi-automatics. Even then, it was traumatic for us. I can't imagine what it's like for kids now. I've seen Oz get called out for calling it "trendy" in the episode, but I don't know exactly what people are thinking he meant by it. He was stated a fact, you know? It WAS becoming trendy, and there were even copycat shootings/attempts sometimes after one would hit the news. It's important to talk about.

Jennifer McIntyre

I think all digital versions of it are the remaster :( At least streaming wise

Jennifer McIntyre

this has to be one of my favorite episodes, it's the best of every world. it nails comedy, romance, mystery, and life lessons. "apathy on the rise, no one cares" is a great headline, freddie may be kind of a weirdo (because he said cheerleaders are pseudo-prostitutes, not because he's a loner or anything) but i would 100% tune in to his paper if he's gonna be putting out gems like that lol i don't even think oz was just cool with freddie's review, i think he genuinely agrees. there are so many lines of him trashing his own guitar skills but my favorite has to be when he gets shot in the arm in 2x10 and willow asks him if he can still play the guitar ok. he responds "not well but... not worse"

esme

In the end scene, when Buffy reveals to Giles her newfound knowledge and he walks into a tree, one of the extras in the background gave a little "extra" for the scene and reacted to what Buffy said. I feel it made a funny scene even better.

RavenLord

I was looking forward to this episode, purely for your reaction to Oz's inner monologue while all he says externally is "huh" LOL! Always makes me laugh. Oz is one of my favourites, such a stoic cool character but don't forget how he and willow first met - they were the only 2 students in the whole school who met the criteria of being hand picked on career day by some software mogul. Also little factoid about this episde's gun centric topic: this episode was postponed in the USA, it was originally supposed to air approx a week after the columbine massacre. Also, while school shootings have been synonymous with the USA for what feels like a long time now, prior to columbine the number of school shootings per year were a fraction of what they've been in recent years. I did a little google, prior to when this episode was filmed (circa 1999), the highest annual number of school shootings there was 47 in 1993 - average was closer to less than 20 per year until then. Since 2018, the LOWEST number in usa is 116. 2025 has only just started 35 days ago, and there's already been *18* just this year so far (Source: https://k12ssdb.org/). That's roughly how many there were per year 30 years ago... 1 year worth of so much damage in just one month. My kids only just went back to school today in Australia, and I couldn't even imagine sending them off with a kiss and a hug and wondering if they'll be shot today! My heart doesn't break, it absolutely shatters to think what american families are going through every day.

Crystal Racklyeft

I’m afraid I’m not sure - I’ve purchased the DVDs (for my conscience) and then torrented the series (for my convenience) - that’s the version I checked. It’s a 10+ year old torrent, from before the remaster, which I’m obviously happy to share if you’d like it. I’m afraid I’m not sure what’s available on the streaming platforms / official digital downloads nowadays.

Jack

There are digital versions of the show available to buy on Amazon, are those the OG version of the show, do you know? I was considering buying them from season 4 onwards. No stress if you're not sure :)

Tyler Alexander

I'd never noticed that about Oz winking, but you're absolutely right - you're not meant to see it! I just re-watched it on my original (DVD version) and he's cropped out. Yet another failure from the remaster......
