In the JttW, the Goldfish Demon was known as the King of Miraculous Power. He was originally the favorite pet of the Bodhisattva Guanyin, who got too big for his britches and ran away to the mortal realm. He set up shop in a river near a large village and he made the villagers a deal they couldn't refuse. In exchange for sacrificing two children every year, he uses his weather powers to give them rain to water their crops; the alternative being that he makes it so it never rains. He wasn't very strong, but he was too clever for Wukong to beat in a straight up fight; he saw through Wukong's tricks and always stayed underwater where Wukong couldn't get him. So Wukong went to Guanyin and tattled on him, and she punished him severely.
