the character that was named Thomas was based on a real civil war soldier. He didn't die at the fort but went on to be the first negro to win the congressional medal of honor

The Civil War is almost certainly the most researched topic in American history. The actual of number of books published about the subject is so large that it's probably impossible to know for sure, but it's at least in the tens of thousands. The war was very well documented. It came at a time where most (white) people were literate, postal service for soldiers was slow but dependable and photography was becoming more widespread. In fact, it's such a popular topic that even the historiography of the Civil War (studying how we write about history) is is a huge area of study in itself.

'Lincoln' is good, but it does require some knowledge of how US government and politics work along with the historical context. Hell, I would be surprised if more than half of Americans know how a constitutional amendment is ratified. Without that context I think it'd be hard to appreciate the film fully.

Someone else already mentioned it, but another great movie to check out if you want to learn more about the American Civil War is "Lincoln", from 2012 (though I personally think "The 13th Amendment" would have been a better title for it). It's very different from this one, however, as while this movie focuses on the soldiers in the field, Lincoln is more about the political theatre behind the war. As such, it's very dialogue-heavy, and has a lot of politics, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's still a fantastic movie.

Excellent reaction Dasha! An easy way to remember how to pronounce Andre Braugher’s name is it’s like “Brow (like eye brow) - er”. An “abolitionist” was a person that was in favor of ending slavery. A “secessionist” was someone that wanted the Southern states to leave the United States and form their own country. As you said, the performances in this movie were excellent. Denzel Washington even won an Academy Award for his role. Do you have a P.O. Box? Someone really needs to send you a few boxes of tissues to have at your desk! 😀
