This movie touched on a lot of themes. The responsibility of creation. But also at one point does something stop being an object and start being a person? Are we anthropomorphizing a toaster? Objectifying a sentient being? When does it become unethical to turn something off? It also explores ideas like the “philosophical zombie.” Can a computer really love? Or can it pretend to do so enough to fool us? It’s not unreasonable to believe that a computer doesn’t need emotions to manipulate ours. Then it also talks about the fear of being replaced. Humans had it when they destroyed the robots. David had it when he destroyed his copy. And then there’s the value of authenticity versus facsimile. The recreated mom is not the original mom. The recreated child is not the original. Is the original inherently more valuable than the copy? It didn’t matter to the child. It did matter to the mom. Just so many philosophical ideas packed into this movie
