One of the oldest alien invasions stories had the aliens killed off by germs, yet in modern movies (I'm looking at you, Prometheus) people just wander around on alien worlds without space suits and no way to know what germs are in the air. Ridiculous. Anyway, this movie is a great showcase of Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning as actors. Sheer terror, shock, and panic on their faces. Fun reaction!

Lets just say Rachel resembles the audience perspective xD Yeah the plot to how the aliens die in this film is pretty stupid, but what can you say. this was a story written in the 1800s. It was good for its time, where germs were starting to become understood, so there was a story written about if aliens came they would also die by germs. Yeah next time these aliens attack they better get their vaccinations first, what were they even thinking xD BUT To answer your question about Robbie and why he wanted to fight with the soldiers. He has a huge ego problem called "hero complex."
