Both Moyamensing prison and H.H. Holmes were real. I live in Philadelphia so I'm impressed they pronounced Moyamensing correct. However, a lot of what they say in the show has been disproven. A lot of it comes from 1890s tabloid newspapers and bad journalism. Literally the 1890s version of fake news. Also H.H. Holmes liked to exaggerate his crimes once he was caught. From what I've read H.H. Holmes didn't kill 27 people. It's suspected to be 9. Which is horrible, he was an awful person. He was essentially a conman who travelled America and Canada, killing people who he owed money to, or people who got in the way of his fraud and financial crimes, and crimes of passion. The "Chicago Murder Castle" story comes from 1890s fake newspaper journalism, there wasn't any torture chambers as the show supernatural implied. The Chicago house did have hidden rooms like Sam mentioned, but Holmes actually used the hidden rooms so he could hide his furniture when the repo men came to take back all the stuff he bought on bad credit. He was a terrible guy, but he was more of a conman and serial liar who murdered those who got in his way. Once he was arrested he claimed to have killed 27 people, except again; serial liar. Some of the people he claimed to have killed were actually alive and well living their lives. It's a fascinating, sad, and morbid story really.
