Chapter 2 - Readjusting

I leave the recovery chamber with careful, measured steps, accompanied by the two figures who have become my anchor in this strange new world—my parents, Cassian and Seraphina Veyr. They are still unfamiliar, but their expressions and emotions seem genuine. Trust seemed like an exaggeration of the current arrangement, but for now, I decided to follow their lead.

The hospital that I was in was a place of clinical precision and silent vigilance. Its corridors are sparsely populated, bathed in an immaculate white, and punctuated by narrow bands of shifting blue light. The facility is designed for efficiency: every surface is spotless, every sound is measured, and every movement is accounted for. I can almost feel the weight of the surveillance systems—digital eyes and discreet sensors embedded in the walls—that record every step.

As I pass through the corridor, I notice the presence of corpo agents. They stride purposefully in impeccably tailored suits that blend high fashion with slightly boorish suits with no flash of color. Once again, the deep purple of Seraphina's formal dress stands out. The expressions of corpo agents are cool, detached, and observant; their eyes are enhanced with discreet ocular interfaces, and they scan every visitor with clinical precision. I did notice their gaze evade our group as soon as they noticed the presence of Seraphina. These agents move silently as if an algorithm preordained each step, and their presence underscores the pervasive control of this corporate world.

'Her position is higher than I expected, though I wonder which corpo she is a part of.'

In one shadowed alcove near a reinforced security door, my attention is drawn to a cluster of figures markedly different from the uniformed agents. In the dim light, several mercs stand—individuals whose cybernetic enhancements make their presence both threatening and mesmerizing.

One merc, tall and muscular, has an arm that is a veritable arsenal: heavy plating of matte-black alloy integrated with a retractable plasma blade that was glowing a hot red as he was showing off. His left arm remains organic, contrasting starkly with the engineered precision of his right. His eyes lit up with green data as he scanned our group; unlike the other Corpo agents who shied away, a look of interest came onto his face, which was quickly suppressed.

Another merc nearby sports augmented ocular implants with metal encasing the bridge of his nose and going around his head: one eye glows with an intense, red digital interface, scanning the environment with several flickering layers of data. His face, partially obscured by the tactical visor that flickers with real-time data, exudes a readiness for combat that is both disquieting and fascinating. A wire was coming out of his hand and going into a socket as his gaze was hidden. Even though it seemed like he wasn't watching us, his figure slightly straightened.

'A netrunner?' I thought the panic and dread that were a part of my panic/psychosis episodes earlier had faded, and even though some of the paranoia still bleeds in my outlook on this new reality, a sense of fascination also emerged. 'To be able to directly connect and view data, manipulate the virtual space, and even hack with just a flicker of thought.'

My eyes moved to the third figure, lithe in build, exhibiting cybernetic spinal enhancements visible beneath his tattered jacket—gleaming, interlocking segments that had unknown applications, but with the argumentation being part of the important neural interface, I'm guessing he's the speed/damage dealer of the group. Their augmentations are overt, splattered across their bodies like war paint—a vivid counterpoint to the sleek, refined appearance of the Corpo agents. In this hospital corridor, the contrast is stark: on one side, the controlled elegance of corporate security; on the other, the raw, unapologetic brutality of those engineered for combat.

'This is cyberpunk, a world dancing on the whims of the Corpo yet the freeing reality that has a straight path to power... if you don't mind dealing with barbs extended with each favor.'

Even as my mind catalogs these details, I note that there is no immediate threat—only the quiet presence of a world that is ever prepared for violence. I feel not panic but a growing, analytical fascination with this spectrum of cybernetic evolution. This world had advanced in a different direction from my own. Each merc's augmentation tells a story: the melding of human grit with advanced technology, the ways in which this world has adapted to conflict with enhancements that are both beautiful and deadly.

'I also have some enhancements, though my arm feels less inclined for combat and more geared to precision and adaptability.'

Guided by an internal determination to move forward, I follow my 'parents' through the corridor. Cassian's gaze is methodical as he nods subtly at passing agents. Seraphina, though entirely, ignores everything and everyone, yet what followed her non-commital were hurried nods and slight bows that contrast with the impersonal efficiency of the facility.

Finally, we reached the hospital's secure exit, which was on the top floor instead of the bottom. A sleek, neon-lit concourse that signifies our departure from the sterile, controlled environment of the medical facility. Here, the atmosphere shifts from the muted hum of hospital protocols to the vibrant pulse of the city's corporate world. The concourse is spacious, with the sky that seems to stretch upward into a cloud-filled void. Still, the world moves from monotonous white walls and blue light. It opened up to a world of colors and movement.

Waiting at the exit is a holocar—a vehicle that embodies the fusion of art and engineering in this futuristic society. Its smooth, jet-black chassis curves gracefully follow the principles of aerodynamics. It was basically shaped like a pod with clear, sharp lines enhancing its appeal, accented by dynamic holographic contours that caught the ambient neon glow. As we approach, the holocar's interface flares to life, displaying a personalized greeting:

Holocar Interface: "Welcome aboard, Seraphina Veyr, Senior Technology Officer at VIREX INDUSTRIES, accompanied by Cassian Veyr and son Dane Veyr. Destination: Corporate Residential District – Meridian Tower, Suite 2807."

The words resonated with me, and finally, some form of information was given to me. My thoughts rushed through different channels at once, but two streams stood out. First, I liked the sound of her being a Senior Technology Officer. Second, the name seemed unfamiliar; there was no Corp named like that in the game, which gave rise to the feeling of unease. Unlike the hospital's sterile efficiency, the holocar was splashed with personal touch, yet at the same time, it was muted, hidden behind plain sight.

Cassian and Seraphina share a brief glance before they both move into it. Cassian's eyes, ever analytical, assess the vehicle's interface with quiet satisfaction, while Seraphina's gentle smile radiates assurance and an unspoken promise of stability. My eyes stared down the edge; we weren't that high up as there were plenty of skyscrapers that were literally piercing the sky. I was a little hesitant, but the slow dipping of the holocar that I had expected never came.

'The thrust of the engine was perfectly able to counterbalance my added weight within microseconds so that I would not notice anything. There was no form of lag in the calculating process, which seemed absurd, but then again, maybe the car was relying on the protective models to determine the time when my weight would be added to the total.'

My thoughts swirled along the physics and AI aspects and their implementation as I settled down at the closest seat. The door slides shut with a soft hiss, and the cabin envelops us in a cocoon of ambient light and suffocating silence as the cacophony of noises vanishes. The interior of the car is also a marvel of ergonomic design. Purple-contoured seats seem to mold perfectly to our forms, and a vast holographic dashboard projects a dynamic, three-dimensional map of a city, this city, I'm guessing, in brilliant detail. My metal armrests naturally on the seat as I lean back into comfort. Yet, as I didn't take the initiative to speak in the suffocating silence tightened around us.

My cybernetic eye—still adapting to the ceaseless digital overlays—is eager to capture every nuance of this new mode of travel. As the holocar's systems come online, glowing lines trace our planned route through the corporate district. Cassian is the first to interact with the interface. He navigates the digital layers of pixels with deliberate, practiced gestures, summoning up various overlays that reveal our route in luminous detail. "We'll take the elevated express," he explains in a measured tone, his voice calm and authoritative. "It's the most efficient path to Meridian Tower, and the view along the way is unparalleled." He added as an afterthought as his fingers danced over the holographic panel as if conducting a symphony of data dance—each touch activating streams of information that annotate the cityscape below.

'Alright, it seems like I won't win the waiting game; since both of them are corpo, they understand the need for information more than anyone else.'

"Tell me anything and everything I can use," I said, my voice losing its cold and calculative edge, but the tone remained dull.

“Dane,” Seraphina begins softly, her tone now completely losing its edge, “if you truly want to grasp the forces that shape Neurospire, you need to understand the structure that governs it.” Her eyes, augmented with subtle digital filters, scan the passing skyline as she speaks.

“Neurospire isn’t just a city,” she explains, “it’s an ecosystem—a complex web where powerful megacorps and ruthless gangs coexist, often in uneasy alliances, each carving out their own territory and influence.”

She pauses as our route curves along a wide, elevated corridor, and the digital map zooms in on several prominent structures. “At the very top, you have the megacorps. VIREX Industries—the very corporation we serve—is the dominant force in the city. They’re pioneers in cybernetics and biotech, pushing the boundaries of what it means to be human. Their influence permeates every aspect of life here, from the cutting-edge enhancements in our own bodies to the very architecture of the city.”

Seraphina leaned forward, her voice soft yet imbued with gentle authority. "Cassian works with a team of operatives for the senior information officer, the kind that deals with everything concerning the safety of the corp," she observes me absorbing what she is saying with my full focus. Her hands glide across the interface, swiping away the data of traffic, weather, and crime reports that Cassian was over-analyzing, and as her eyes glowed, data started streaming onto the floating holographic screen.

Her voice takes on a reflective quality. “But VIREX is not alone. There are others—Ironsphine Syndicate, HELIOS Dynamics, Nexcore Technologies, Zenith Energy Consortium, and Lucent Pharmaceutics. Together, these corps combined account for 85% of the free credits traded/generated each year." Seraphine spoke, her words cold, yet with each name, a symbol for the corp appeared on the holographic screen in front of me.

"Virex Industries: The corp we belong to specializes in Cybernetics, Biotech, and Neural Engineering. Although we are the most powerful biotech corporation in Neuroshpire compared to cash inflow/outflow, VIREX specializes in cybernetic enhancements, experimental neural implants, and synthetic organ development. Publicly, we market life-extending tech. Secretly, there have been several sanctioned experiments dealing with mind control, behavioral manipulation, and transhumanist projects." The cold detachment with which she had just listed out war crimes and crimes against humanity surprised and shocked me.

Still, it seemed like giving me that truth bomb was supposed to be a wakeup slap to the harsh reality as she continued, "Ironspine Syndicate: With their popular slogan 'Order Forged in Steel.' A paramilitary megacorp also operates as the de facto police force in Neurosphere. They provide security for high-profile clients, run private armies, and control mass surveillance networks. Their officers are cybernetically enhanced for obedience and efficiency, blurring the line between soldier and machine. At the same time, their specialization lies in Covert operations, political assassinations, and population control through fear and intimidation...."

“Then there’s Helios Dynamics. They are the masters of media and information—shaping public opinion, controlling the narrative, and ensuring that the corporate message is broadcast to every corner of the city. Their digital presence is everywhere: from the holographic billboards that light up the night to the augmented reality feeds that our citizens consume daily....”

...

She kept on speaking, detailing a complex mess of the web woven around this towering city. We went from one corp to another, each involved in one or more fundamental aspects of what was considered normal living requirements. Once she finished listing the corps, she continued naturally to the gangs. “On the fringes of corporate power,” Seraphina adds, “operate groups that are not beholden to any single megacorp. These are the gangs—the Black Sun Cartel, for example. They control much of the underbelly of Neurospire, managing illicit trade and enforcing their own brutal code in the lower districts. They’re known for their distinctive style—sleek cybernetic enhancements of different corps splattered across their bodies in chaotic, aggressive designs.”

"The Glitch Bloom, a loosely organized collective of digital anarchists and netrunners. They inhabit the shadows of the city’s vast data networks, often clashing with corporate security forces as they expose corruption and challenge the status quo. They’re unpredictable and dangerous, but they represent a counterforce to the monolithic power of the megacorps. Though their influence in the city is slowly being eroded...”

Seraphina’s gaze shifts momentarily to Cassian, who is intently observing the holocar’s routing data. “And don’t forget the Wraith Pack,” she continues. “These are the nomads of the urban wastelands—scavengers and rebels who operate on the periphery of the corporate order. They’re less organized than the Black Sun, but their modifications are raw, brutal, and highly effective in the chaos of street warfare.”

"They don't like coming into the city most of the time, preferring to deal with the wasteland disrupting the supply lines of various cities and a major part of any and all smuggling rings tied to the city."

I take in her words, each name and detail weaving a picture of Neurospire as a layered, often conflicting network of power. It was so similar yet so different from the game; the names didn't ring a bell, yet the dystopian picture that Seraphina painted was eerily similar. I looked down at the neon mess blinking away through the clouded air, “So, in essence,” I summarize, “the city is divided between the high, controlled zones of the megacorps and the unpredictable, anarchic elements of the gangs?”

Seraphina nods, her eyes reflecting both the neon lights outside and the depth of her understanding. “Exactly, Dane. The megacorps—like VIREX, Ironspine Syndicate, and Helios Dynamics—define the upper echelons of our society. They are the architects of order, leveraging vast resources, advanced cybernetics, and relentless data-driven strategies to maintain their dominance. In contrast, the gangs—such as Black Sun, Glitch Bloom, and the Wraith Pack—thrive on chaos. They operate in the shadows, exploiting the gaps in the system, and their very existence is a testament to the resistance against overwhelming corporate control.”

She paused for a moment before she exhaled deeply, her back straightening as she looked into my eyes and continued, "Every building, neon beacon, and digital overlay is part of a larger narrative—a pulse that tells the story of Neurospire." Her words add depth to the journey, transforming it into a living tapestry of ambition and innovation.

I glance at Cassian, who gives a slight nod as if to emphasize the precarious equilibrium that defines Neurospire. “In many ways,” he adds quietly, “the constant tension between corporate order and anarchic resistance drives innovation. It forces the megacorps to continuously upgrade their technology, refine their strategies, and extend their reach even further. And for those on the fringes, the gangs, the struggle is raw and unfiltered—a battle for autonomy in a system designed to homogenize everything.”

"Each day, hundreds die in the city; this struggle to survive drives our world forward on the path to sustenance."

...

...

What followed the heavy discussion was a moment of silence as all of us grew silent. I looked outside at the window. Instead of being a smooth bulletproof glass, it seems like even the window of the holocar was not able to escape technological advancements. The panoramic windows, far more than simple glass, are integrated digital canvases that merge the real and the virtual. Outside, Neurospire unfurls in breathtaking splendor. The skyline is an intricate mosaic of futuristic architecture—a city of towering megastructures, each adorned with an explosion of neon colors: electric blues, fuchsia pinks, and deep crimsons that interlace like vibrant threads in a grand design.

I watch intently as the window transforms into an interface, quickly connecting with my eyes and overlaying navigational cues upon the window. A glowing path appears, guiding us through the maze of the corporate district. Every landmark is annotated with detailed information: building names, heights, historical significance, and even real-time updates on structural diagnostics. The digital world interweaves with the physical, turning the urban vista into a dynamic, living circuit board.

“Meridian Tower is our destination,” Seraphina states, her voice steady and reassuring. “It embodies everything that the megacorps strive for—order, efficiency, and the promise of a future where technology enhances every aspect of life. It’s a world apart from the chaos below, a sanctuary for those who have ascended into the upper echelons of corporate society.”

The holocar decelerates gracefully as we approach a sleek, glass-walled access bay integrated into the side of Meridian Tower. The vehicle’s interface displays our destination in bold, luminescent characters. I watch as Cassian’s analytical eyes scan the display and then the surrounding skyline. “Meridian Tower is the zenith of corporate residential design,” he remarks. “Every element is optimized to ensure not only comfort and security but also the smooth operation of our corporate network. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when ambition and technology are aligned. The lower floors are market-focused, and the upper echelons are geared towards residential.”

My gaze flickered to the text attached to the building.

[Meredian Tower]

[Owned by Virex Industries]

[Number of Floors: 30]

[Current Estimated Capacity: 200,000]

'That's max capacity, right? Because the thought of there being 200,000 corpo agents for just one MegaCorp seems a bit daunting.'

The holocar’s doors slide open with a soft, automated chime, and we step out into a spacious vestibule that exudes refined luxury. The transition is striking—from the clinical austerity of the hospital corridors to a lobby that is warm, inviting, and imbued with the promise of high-end living. I thought that the building would be as bland as the hospital, but it seems like the corps hasn't forsaken the comfort of humanity and warmth yet. Interactive digital displays greet us with personalized messages, and the ambient lighting, coupled with the gentle hum of energy systems, creates an atmosphere of serene opulence.

As I stand with my 'parents' amidst the sleek lines and ambient light of the Meridian Tower, I reflect on Seraphina’s explanation. Neurospire, with all its dazzling complexity, is a city defined by layers of power—megacorps that shape every facet of life and gangs that rebel against the uniformity imposed by that power. Both forces are integral to the ecosystem, and their constant interplay drives the evolution of this futuristic society. However, the advantage that I have for my survival is that my identity comes with certain privileges.

In the quiet, measured cadence of the holocar ride and the soft murmur of our conversations, I begin to see that my new life is not merely a personal transformation but a microcosm of the city itself. The neon-lit chaos, the cold efficiency of corporate management, and the raw, unbridled energy of street-level resistance all coexist in a delicate balance. As I journey toward my new home at Meridian Tower, I realize that understanding this balance—this hierarchy of power—is key to reclaiming the fragments of my identity and forging a path forward.

'I need to fit in, and I would need way more information unless I want to be embroidered into the corpo world of espionage.'

The elevator ride that follows is equally transformative. As we ascend in a high-speed, automated elevator reserved for the elite, I am treated to a panoramic view of Neurospire’s skyline—a living, breathing mosaic of ambition, control, and resistance. Cassian’s measured reflections and Seraphina’s poetic insights echo in my mind as the city unfolds below us. Every illuminated structure, every digital overlay, and every neon glimmer serves to hide a dark shadow where the real struggle takes place. The world in the game was shown from a very different perspective. The path I was on was the true Corpo path.

'Does that mean I would have to go to the Corpo academy? How old am I here?'

When we reach the 28th floor, the elevated expressway and corporate district have receded, replaced by a serene corridor lined with minimalist art and bathed in warm, ambient light. As we approach the door—a sleek, biometrically secured portal—I feel the weight of the journey and the layers of understanding that have settled within me. In my new apartment, I will begin to piece together the scattered echoes of my past, armed with the knowledge that Neurospire is a city of extremes, where order and chaos, control and rebellion, coexist in a perpetual dance.

"Go on. Maybe the familiar environment will help you remember, but don't stress it, Dane. I will take care of everything." Seraphina spoke as she encouraged me to go in, a hint of steel seeping into her voice at the end. I nodded in her general direction as I walked closer to the door. The green camera lit up as a beam of rays hit me like a scanner. The door hissed open as a prompt appeared in my vision.

[Welcome back, Dane Veyr]

[Long absence detecting. Initiating advanced sterilizing protocols]

The door remained open, so I peeked inside my apartment; every detail—from the floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the sprawling urban expanse to the smart surfaces that adjust to the ambient conditions—speaks of a future defined by technological excellence and refined aesthetics. As I walked in, I recalled Seraphina’s words; looking around, the photos that I had seen as glitches were now lined along the wall as holographs.

'Alright, I should dig in to try and understand mo-' I stopped as another window popped up, this one different once again from my usual HUD as I looked on in interest as words, in English, etched across my vision.

'What in living fuck?'
