Dark Science #85 - The Funeral of Kusanagi

I’m deeply sorry for the lateness on this one and for worrying anyone. I turns out depression doesn’t go away just because you made a post about it. I fell into a pretty big hole and I’m only now climbing out. Taking care of yourself is a process, and I’m trying to better do that now and in the future. Thanks so much for sticking around with me. Dresden Codak’s my favorite thing in the world to make, and I hope you like reading it.

Glad to have you back! <3

I'm not on here that often, but I'm very glad to hear that you've managed to get out of that hole. Soldier on! :)

Dresden Kodak is certainly addictive, once you've started you can't get away from it. And it's very different from other web comics, with so much attention to detail put into it! That takes time...

I'll just chime in and say the comic is and has always been a joy to come back to see. This is one of a few works that taught me patience and the pleasantness of waiting. My friends in college were fans of Dungeons and Discourse and Oldman-man. The website's always been in my bookmarks (even across computers before they did that cool sync thing). Your fans will be here no matter what, even years later!

It's true that I was getting worried — don't blame yourself for that, it's just what people do — but sometimes other people's worries aren't what you need when you're climbing out of that hole. And we shouldn't be gauging your mental state by how many updates you you post in a month anyway. Take it as slow as you have to.

Randall Blank

Great stuff! You're the best, I love your way of throwing us off what we *thought* was the obvious track. Take your time to get it right, I know you use it well.

Alfons

Thank you for the art! I’m wishing you strength and courage to continue in all the things.

'That's exactly how this grace thing works' It's not the long walk home that will change this heart But the welcome I receive with every start

Your mental health comes first. I support you because the concepts you have made me think through have helped twist my own mind in such amazing ways. I'll still be here even if its an update a year. Because to me it is perfect

Wow! Whoo! Once again staggered by the detail and execution of your story line, your character development, and your art. Agreeing with @TPRJones, I will also wait eagerly and patiently for this ... and if taking a breaking from this saga for another less demanding project appeals to you, look for me to wait for it also.

For as long as you care to make it I will be around to read it. But looking back at your April post I worry you may have too much tied up into this one project. Might it be helpful to have something else, some lesser project, that you can work on from time to time when it's especially hard to accept the work you are producing on Dresden Codak as being good enough? Something that you aren't as invested in that you can turn to and allow yourself to feel like the work isn't up to the same high standards as this project you care so much about and that it is okay because it's ... lesser? I am no expert at either depression or being an artist, though, so I may be completely off base.

TPRJones

Glad to see the new work. Take care of yourself.

First and foremost we (your fans) want to see you get healthy. Secondly, ignore us. You don't owe your fans anything, OK? You're not failing anyone if you have to take time to get healthy and you shouldn't even think about working on the comic unless it's part of your process in healing. You are not your comic, you are not your depression, you are not shaped by the expectations of others whether they are family or loved ones. Put yourself and your health first, all the rest will still be there when you're feeling better. Oh, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Ever.

Awesome page! The architect strongly reminds me of the female Morgan from Prey, with the red color scheme, the same hair style, and the mind erasing plot! https://goo.gl/images/YfZJcd

Please take care of yourself. We understand. My beloved has chronic depression, and I know what it does to her, so I can at least imagine what you're going through. I love Dresden Codak and I cherish it when it comes out... but I would rather you do it in a way that is good for you.

Hugh Eckert

I get so excited every time there's a new comic, great to hear it's something you enjoy making too!

Teddy

So glad to hear from you again, but mostly to hear you're still taking care of yourself. DC changed how I see so much of what goes on in life and science and I'm super grateful to you for making it. But depression's a b*tch. Pace yourself as you need ❤️
