The big question mark, as suggested by both Melchior and Yeong-Soo, is that there's no evidence of Kim's existence prior to 7 years ago, when Kim would have been 15-16, right after her mother (according to Kim) died. So Vonnie taking Kim in happened around then, since obviously Vonnie has memory of it. But, given that no one remembers Kim prior to this, Vonnie wouldn't, for example, know anything about Kim's mother other than what Kim told her.

2025-01-01 23:00:12 +0000 UTCThe events of Hob happened roughly 5 years before Dark Science, when Kim was 17-18. This family photo is obviously Kim post-Hob, likely the same winter that Hob ends in. Vonnie wasn't Kim's guardian or anything that formal after Kim's mom died, it's just that Kim was considered part of Vonnie's family after that.

2024-12-18 08:10:32 +0000 UTCI'm guessing Vonnie has this picture and its only been ripped recently, after Vonnie felt betrayed by Kim. Since she has the artificial arm it doesn't really give us any insights into Kim's existence before the end of Hob. The best clue is still page 157 noting Vonnie took care of Kim after her mother died. Even Kim's father didn't seem to think she existed before then, or remember her mother.
