Hi everyone,
This latest project was part of a collaboration with Dianna Cowern, aka "Physics Girl", whose associated video you can find here.
As mentioned in the video, this all started out as an exploration of Vortex Rings, which is something Dianna covers more on the video she did, but I got caught up in how one of the methods we used for visualizing a cross section of these rings is actually an extremely nice illustration of ambient turbulent flow. For example, it makes the existence of many eddies abundantly clear.
I thought this made for a nice chance to talk about the math of turbulence, and one particular fact I think is mind-blowing about how predictably the energy is distributed across different length scales.
While it's a bit different for me to have the core visuals be live action shots instead of programatic animations, these visuals are so surreal that they almost look more like a computer simulation than real life.
I hope you enjoy!
