New video: Why aren't you making math videos?

As mentioned in the previous update, we are doing a contest encouraging more people to get started with math exposition online.  Rather than simply posting an announcement video, I decided to put together some advice for anyone getting started with all this.

New video: Why aren't you making math videos?

Comments

I’d love to see if I can explain compact sets in the topological sense in which they are introduced in the second chapter of the third edition of Baby Rudin. A lot of the time I see explanations of it in terms of sequences, and that’s just not the way I learned them (again, Rudin). If there are any suggestions of books or documents I can read to help or use a basis with such a video, that’d be great. As you might know, Rudin is very terse, and using him as a basis for the video doesn’t seem to me that it will turn out to be that fruitful.

That sounds amazing!

Oh, iMovie is great for simple tasks. In fact, I think it takes you surprisingly far (which is why I used it for so long), but the more video editing you do the more quickly you run into frustrating walls there. In general, use the simplest tool you have available until you run into walls. Only then do you start thinking about doing something more "professional".

I've always wanted to do a video series on failures and dead-ends in math and physics. We shine a bright spotlight on the theories and papers that led to where we are today, but often ignore that failure is just as important to the process. One concrete example of this would be the Aether; the theorized medium that electromagnetic waves propagated through. The Michelson–Morley experiment's failure to detect the aether was pivotal in the development of relativity. Another example comes from the dawn of electricity research; various experiments attempted to create a "reservoir" of electric fluid, and their failures led to the understanding of electric circuits. I just never found enough material. Finding negative results today is tough; finding negative results in history books, archives, etc. is extremely tough.

I'm already slightly into my first project but have been stalled for a while so this is a great incentive to finish it off. Does anyone have any advice on how to combine the animation snippets + voiceover into a final video? Grant seems to implicitly criticise the use of iMovie which is what I was intending to use!

You should definitely make what you have in mind anyway, and perhaps even submit partial progress if you want. We had to put the deadline somewhere, but the real spirit of this is not so much to select winners after a certain date, but to encourage more people to get started in general.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you make :)

@Grant Any chance you'd consider extending the deadline? This is something I'd like to get involved in and have always been interested in, but between a full time day job + end of half deliverables, and just finding out about this now, it's really hard to do something high quality in a month, especially since I'd like to order equipment. This almost seems targeted towards hs and college students who have a summer break :(

Yeah, my apologies, it looks like it was a little delayed getting out to iTunes.

I actually joined Patrion here because there is a particular bit of physics and math I want to see explained. Maybe someone will be inspired to make a video or program or something to answer my question. The Aharonov–Bohm effect implies that the magnetic vector potential field is what is actually REAL in physics, not the magnetic field, and while people often illustrate charge fields and magnetic fields, no one has shown me how to visualize the magnetic vector potential field, and I would like to see that. My current understanding of the part of magnetism that doesn't rely on quantum spin is that it can be entirely derived from the incredibly strong forces between charges as affected by how motion works in special relativity. But I have no idea if there's any connection between that and magnetic vector potential.

Thanks. Now I find it so I guess it was still rolling out to the catalog servers when I tried before.

I found it under "The 3b1b podcast" in Pocket Casts

FWIW, I would still make the video. I suspect there will be other competitions. 🤞

Mutual Information

This does sound interesting, but I already have a analysis exam coming up for august 20th so I wont have time for the competition. Since I would already have a rough Idea about what topic I would want to do a video I might (including a substantial amount of uncertainty) decide to make a video about it in the future anyway.

I wasn’t going to submit. Not sure why - maybe math-community-shyness, but I’m convinced now and a bit excited!

I only use https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYO_jab_esuFRV4b17AJtAw, is there a podcast?

While we're there, we DO want feedback from general public - and from you - about about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-SCcOMNfis&t=30s Thanx in advance

Hey, brilliant idea, I'll see if we can do something more focused, but on the general theme of this one: "Derivative Thinking with George Chiesa" [Just for Jerks] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-SCcOMNfis&t=30s NB: Jerk as in derivative of acceleration, not colloquial...

Tried searching for 3blue1brown on Overcast (my podcast listening app of choice which uses the Apple Podcasts directory as a reference) but didn't find the podcast you mention. Fired up Apple Podcasts as an experiment but couldn't find it there either. Also tried searching on your name. What podcast name should we be searching for to find your show? Thanks.

Perfect timing! I just started making math videos recently. Thanks for this!
