Manim Q&A

Wonderful patrons,

Despite my original plans, I spent a fair bit of this month continuing with efforts I began in December to improve manim. Given that I've been putting so much time into this, and I know some people are curious about the process and workflows behind videos, I thought I'd do a casual Q&A live stream for patrons to answer any questions about manim.

I thought I'd share a bit about what the tool is, and how my workflow has changed with it over time. The floor is open, though, for anything you all might be curious about.

I'm assuming the weekend will be when people are most available, and for those of you interested in joining, kindly fill out the poll below with your preference for a time, if you have one.

I'll post the unlisted link to the live stream later this week once the schedule is firm. Even though it's mainly meant for Patreon supporters if there's someone you know you would enjoy joining, feel free to share the link.

In the meantime, feel free to kick off with any questions in the comments below.

In other news, the artwork for the Galois saga continues to progress thanks to the tireless efforts of Kurt, and a few other contract contributors. Here's just a small taste with a few samples for the various styles we're leaning toward. More updates to come on that as things start to get more put together in February.

See you this weekend!

He's answered this before in interviews. One of his pupils is 3/4 blue and 1/4 brown, hence the name of the channel and the logo (which depicts an eye). He wants to share the way he sees math (and perhaps the world?) with others through this channel. Hope that helps!

Can you tell me how you came up with the name 3Blue1brown? I've asked many many times, no response!

John T. Draper

Hmmm, hard to say because often when I have a clear answer to that question I just go in and make the change. I suppose the language choice might be a big one, in hindsight, there would be some real benefits to having it all in Javascript and more easily displayable on the web, and that's a fundamental enough change that I couldn't just decide to turn around and do it.

I'd love to talk about some of that! I'll say upfront a big part of my motivation for writing custom shaders there was more from a desire to learn, and I've always learned best by implementing things myself, as opposed to thinking I have some better algorithm than others out there. That said, the algorithms I did land on have a ton of interesting math, so would be fun to chat about.

I think of it mainly as an explanatory tool, but there have been many times when I feel like I gained further insight into a topic after coding up a visualization and seeing what it looked like.

I'll make sure the leave the link up so that it can be viewed after.

Certainly, depending on how many people are there I'll probably set it up so as to read questions from the chat associated with the live stream.

I talked about this a bit in a few past posts, here's one giving some better context: https://www.patreon.com/posts/epic-of-galois-69851213?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link

I'll definitely leave the link up for anyone who wants to watch afterward.

I noticed some new changes in manim related to shaders and rendering and first thing that came to mind as a question is - have you found or thought of some optimisations to GL algorithms like filling shapes, antialiasing lines or bezier curves or maybe some other basic graphics algorithms? Another question - do you welcome manim ports to other languages?

Q: "Hindsight is a wonderful thing" as the quote goes, if you were to start over what changes would you make to manim knowing what you know now? Im particularly curious about the unkown unknowns that you encountered.

I also think a recording would be great. Q: Do you think manim is mainly an explanatory tool, or is there analytical capability beyond the components?

Jeremy

Recordings would be amazing!

Sadly, I can't make any of those times. Would it be possible to view a recording?

since I am somewhat involved in ManimCE now, it would be very interesting to hear your view about the two forks and efforts to reunite the project.

Uwe Zimmermann

What are the Galois sagas?

Time spent on Manim is time well spent—thanks for your efforts!

Tom Loredo

Will I be able to ask you questions?
