Net Neutrality: Recommended Resources?

QUESTION: Any recommended reading, videos, lectures et cetera so I can learn more about the history leading up to, inner workings, implications about the less of Net Neutrality

Hey everyone, I'm sure everyone's familiar with this to some degree, and it's been fucking with my brain for a while now, but I want to try and see if there's anything I can do before December 14th.

My brother lives in China, and it's very annoying that I can't communicate with him through certain channels. Due to other Great Firewall restrictions it means it also means it's far harder for him stay in touch with our less tech-savvy parents, and he has limited access to certain types of news. There are VPN's and stuff like that sure, but those drop frequently, you have to reconnect et cetera. In case you needed another metaphor for NN: imagine that America had the Great Firewall, but you can pay more to get past it.

Speaking of this brother, he had a book I can't remember the name of (it was sort of along the lines of Nicholas Carr and Jerry Mander's work) and he was talking about how nowadays rather than paying for something finite and physical, we're paying for access to something infinite and digital. This isn't necessarily a bad thing: ebooks, video games, movies, youtube videos et cetera can technically meet infinite demand with infinite supply - but the money goes to the people who actually did something to contribute to the existence of that thing.

With Net Neutrality gone we're going to have to pay more for access with nothing in return, and the money will go to someone who is not in any way shape or form improving the content we are accessing.

Anyways, I have a marathon coming up and was planning on making a quick video on how I'm preparing for it with only 6 days left (3 days now), but I think it's more important to see if I can come up with something quick about Net Neutrality to at the very least educate a few more people on the issue.

Comments

The internet is the last bastion if free speech. The cinglimerates that own the telecomm industry will have total control of informstion, message, marketing. We already are living with oligarchy soon we will have oppression like Chine and Russia. The vastajority have no clue what we are facing. If Verizion or ATT ir the Koch brothers dont like what you are saying or that you are competitive with their products, just charge you more to operate a website, slow down connection speed so no one wants to download tou,

Just want to thank you in advance for making it easier to understand the implications of NN. It is needed and I reach for your videoes often, when I need to make someone understand a complex topic. Great speed on the marathon!
