Torchwood Season 1 - Episode 13

That was a very "interesting" finale. Hmmm I really want to know what all of you think of this one.

Torchwood Season 1 - Episode 13

Comments

"Killing your boss is one step too far" - Nicole This could be a good story but it ends thirty minutes too soon. The line from Jack when he grabs Gwen "What have you done?" would have made a great cliffhanger before another full episode to resolve the story. The shadow of the monster kills people. Not quite sure why that is - but it's a monster and it can do what it likes. It's meant to be the son of "The Impossible Planet" Beast, I believe, and devours life. Ok. The monster is creepy because it kills people by casting its shadow on them and it's very very big. But, as I mentioned in another comment, I think something perhaps creepier would have been just to see a mysterious dark devouring shadow moving over the city killing people as it touches them. And rather than being told absolutely everything by Bilis the team should have to work it out for themselves. The makers did mention that the story concept started with the idea of monster striding over Cardiff - so they did that I guess. BTW they do show a couple of buildings collapsing in the shots of the monster on the horizon. But it all finishes too quickly. They needed another episode to have more depth to the story. The monster goes after Jack but it found him a bit unpleasant to devour. So why didn't it turn away and keep killing the rest of Cardiff? Not sure. And I don't really get the ending because it's too rushed. The monster dies from absorbing Jack's immortal lifes. Ok. And the rift gets closed because of that? Perhaps. And where did the monster's body go? Into rift or something I guess. Time gets restored and Rhys is alive - that's nice. I assume everyone else in Cardiff who died under the shadow is alive again too. But Jack was a bit too dead for him to recover immediately. Yep - no consequences. In early concepts of the season they had intended Rhys to die in this story - but he's one of the most likable normal characters in the season. (Of course, PC Andy is nice too.) The hand was Jack's "Doctor" detector. When it started bubbling, Jack realised that the Doctor was near. The hand got left in the TARDIS at the end of "Last of the Time Lords" and we see it in the Christmas episode. And at then end of the episode, Jack runs off to leap onto the TARDIS at the start of "Utopia". See ya, Jack!

Oh thank you Stephen, I really thought I was the only one. Although the IMBD rating already seemed a little too low, so that I thought I might not be alone with this one. I wouldn´t have even minded the missing explanation for the demon, if the fight, would have been better. That fight with Jack was too short, too easy, too uninteresting. I really didn´t like it. I agree with you 100% that Rhys deserves better. I´m really not into this story of Gwen trying to avoid the breakup at any cost, when you can clearly see that this relationship is already over. I hope that in season 2 either they will break up, or the relationship will get better somehow. Even though I cannot imagine how that might work. I don´t like Owens character tbh. I hope he´ll grow up it season 2 and at least tries to think with his brain, instead of his heart sometimes. He is 100% led by his emotions, and his decision are bad almost every single time. And him blaiming other people for his failures is even worse. You´re right about the organisation I guess. It´s strange for a show to do that, but I guess making them all a little more human and realistic, and less perfect, really gives them the opportunity to create better Drama. It´s interesting for me, how much I do like that they did that, and how much I don´t like it, at the same time. :D I didn´t like the angrier Jack either. He seems so much more different than in Dr. Who. And it really stood out to me even more, because he came back to Dr. Who for the series finale. The contrast was immense in my eyes. I don´t like that they made him so different in Torchwood.

It's not just you, the ending of the episode is a huge anti-climax which left a lot of people feeling a bit let down. Plus I don't think there was much explanation within the episode for the demon itself and why it was there. I do like Gwen's boyfriend Rhys a lot. He's very patient and easy going all things considered and it takes quite a lot for him to become angry. I don't think that Gwen actually stopped loving him when she was having her affair with Owen but he deserved better. Owen drove me mad all the way through the series but I think part of the set up is that the organisation is incredibly dysfunctional and made up of misfits. And sometimes that makes for better drama. I didn't like Jack's goading of the others though. He's much angrier in this programme than he is in Doctor Who. I have said before that Tosh is by far my favourite of all the team although I may be biased I suppose.
