Dr. Who Classics - Genesis of the Daleks Part 5

Part 5...So close to the finale :)

Dr. Who Classics - Genesis of the Daleks Part 5

I really liked all the talks between Davros and the doctor. I didn´t expect conversations to be that interesting and deep when going into the episodes. That was a welcome surprise. :) I didn´t recognize the costume change, thank you for telling me. Wow how do you know all this stuff about the history of the episodes. Your knowledge is endless. :) Thank you for telling me all of those interesting information. :)

"To know that the tiny pressure of my thumb, enough to break the glass, would end everything. Yes, I would do it!" - Davros, Genesis of the Daleks The "tiny pressure of my thumb" conversation between the Doctor and Davros is really good. And we also get the "They talk of democracy, freedom, fairness. Those are the creeds of cowards." speech in the episode which triggers our memories of our own history and modern times. Sarah Jane gets a change of costume mid-story or perhaps this is even a second change if you remember that she lost the yellow coat she started the story with. That doesn't happen very often with companions - ignoring people disguising themselves as a guard or something. I think this is related to the fact that we were TARDIS-less at the start of this story so a companion couldn't nip into the TARDIS for a quick change of costume before the next story. The story was chosen to be rescreened in the post-Christmas week as a 85-minute "movie" edit of the episodes. The Radio Times magazine included a special illustration with the programme listing. This story is one of the most repeated stories being shown twice on the BBC in 1975, then in 1982 and 1993 and 2000 - before streaming services came along. It came out on VHS video tape and then later on DVD etc. Interestingly, the story also had an audio-only release as an LP record and cassette with additional narration by Tom Baker.

Wow 31 years, that´s such a long time. :) No wonder I didn´t recognize her. :) I guess you´re right, if you grew up with her as an idol, it may be different, but it was so much harder for me. I did film the 6th part on another day. You´re right it doesn´t make sense to record with the headaches. I took care for myself and watched the episode on another day. :) Haha I hope you will still recognize me. :D :D

That is so true. His mind was totally gone at a certain point. He sounded so intelligent and crazy at the same time. And I hope Putin will never reach that point. Usually in real life narcicists do care so much about themselves that they would never kill themselves. So let´s hope for the best. Haha I never thought about Davros and his body under that metall Dalek shell. Thanks for those nightmares :D :D

Yes that´s true. But maybe I would have put the pieces together if I heard the name Sarah. I can´t remember them using her name at all in the first episodes. Could be wrong about that though. :)

I didn´t know that, thank you for telling me. It feels strange though. I can´t imagine that they didn´t know this middlefinger sign, because it´s like universal language nowadays. But I know exactly what gesture you mean regarding Spike. I always thought it might mean something bad, but I didn´t know the exact meaning. So thank you for clarifying something Buffy related in a Doctor Who chat :) That´s so funny :)

British audiences wouldn't have been very familiar with a "raised middle finger" in 1975 as it's actually an American thing. If you want to be British, you have to stick two fingers up, with the top side of the hand facing outwards; this is known as the "two-fingered salute" or the "v-sign". Interestingly, Wikipedia mentions this in its article about it: "The gesture was also flashed by Spike (played by James Marsters) in "Hush", a Season 4 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The scene was also featured in the series' opening credits for all of Season 5. It was censored by BBC Two only in its early-evening showings of the program." (BBC Two is a sister channel of BBC One, showing programmes expected to have a smaller audience.)

Something that has only just occurred to me is that in this story she's consistently referred to as just "Sarah", whereas in "School Reunion" she's mostly referred to as "Sarah Jane". So that won't have helped you! Heh.

The conversation between the Doctor and Davros regarding the possibility of destroying all life everywhere should such a thing be achievable ("To hold in my hand a capsule that contains such power, to know that life and death on such a scale was my choice. To know that the tiny pressure on my thumb, enough to break the glass, would end everything. Yes, I would do it! That power would set me up above the gods. And through the Daleks, I shall have that power!") is, imo, the key moment of this episode (and one of the best moments in the story); as it proves that Davros is such a madman - so far beyond logical thought - that he would destroy all life in the universe INCLUDING HIMSELF, because it would mean that he was the single greatest entity that had ever existed! You cannot reason with someone who is so far gone. (I'm hoping that Putin hasn't reached that stage yet! Nor that he's surrounded himself with Nyders) As a child, one of the scariest things about Davros to me was (with his disfigured head, and his lower half encased in a Dalek transport shell): what did the rest of him look like, under that shiny tunic? I was always terrified he'd somehow undo it and let us see!

School reunion was broadcast 31 years after this story so it is hardly surprising really that Sarah looked different enough for you to not recognise her. I think (from memory) that we knew she was coming back in 2006 but long-term viewers would have known her anyway because we knew her so well. And I think it is easier to recognise somebody who has grown older than it is to do so from an old photo or film. Of course, being mentioned by name in her first scene in School Reunion helped too! I am going to watch the Part Six reaction straight away. I hope you had a good break before filming it. There is no point in filming if you are not feeling well enough. And I am sure we will still recognise you.
