1: Episode (Watch first) Dr. Who Series 4 - The end of time2

Thank you for clarifying the book lady. I didn´t get that one while watching. :) I wonder why RTD never told anyone about this woman who is supposed to be the doctors mother. That´s so strange. Hahahah while saying that I will never like him, I already thought that it might happen anyway. :D I don´t know how long it will take though. But I think you are right, because looking back to how things started with me and David.... I might end up liking him :D Thank you for telling me about the showrunners change. I already noticed a difference in the first episode. I´m curious how we will continue from here on. :)

Nicologik

Thank you for the confirmation :) I like how they are playing with names and insider knowledge. There is so much to discover with this show. It´s unbeliveable :)

Nicologik

That´s ok, don´t worry :)

Nicologik

Oh that´s the doctors mother? Wow, ok....It´s a pity that RTD didn´t make that clear, because that was something I would have wanted to know. Hmmm strange...But thanks for clarifying. :) Thank you for explaining the lady signing the books. I really didn´t get that because my brain was too distracted by the pain :D Well.... I hope I will....But I´ll be honest here, it might take some time.

Nicologik

Thank you Andrew :)

That "Worst rescue ever" part was sooo funny :D Oh poor David, I already said that it looked kind of uncomfortable, how he was tied up in that chair. :/ Oh yes, putting Wilf in that situation instead of some stranger worked so much better. And Wilf knocking 4 times made my heart sink to the floor. This was gutwrenching. So well done, writers of this episode. You made it as emotional as it can get. :) Yes the callbacks to his companions were great, although I can imagine it worked way better when you watched it originally back then. Because they break between this finale and the series 4 three parter was so much bigger. For me it kind of felt like "we have seen all of them just a few episodes ago". But I loved it anyways :) Wait which drawing? I think I don´t know what exactly you are talking about. If you want to, could you maybe help me out with a screenshot over on Discord? Only if you you want to, though. No pressure. :) The bar scene was great, I enjoyed it very much. Although I mixed up the guy sitting next to him, with the one from that Torchwood episode :/ Well I didn´t get the Callback to the "Family of blood" episode when I originally watched it. At that time my brain was overwhelmed with emotions. It didn´t work anymore. But I´m aware of it now, and I really like it :) Hahah thank you for explaining the "crossing the road" joke. That´s actually funny :D The "I don´t wanna go" scene broke my heart.... And yes, he was great indeed! Thank you for explaining the Geoffrey Noble scene, that´s such a kind gesture. I really like that. :)

I forgot something I wanted to mention. In the Donna wedding scene, the Doctor mentioned that he borrowed some money from "a really lovely man. Geoffrey Noble, his name was". That's a reference to Donna's father from "The Runaway Bride". The actor was ill and passed away and so Donna's father doesn't appear in the fourth series but the character (and hence the actor) gets a mention here.

"Worst rescue ever!", The Doctor, "The End of Time: Part 2" The episode was broadcast on New Year's day 2010, hence the New Year's reference when we get the Rose callback. During the worst rescue ever, they had to show David being pushed down the stairs while being strapped to the wheelchair thing. Unfortunately, David was suffering from back pain (which had got worse during his "Hamlet" performances) and so this wasn't going to be very comfortable. They were able to shoot around David actually being bumped down the stairs. Wilf's story about his army career, while he was talking to the Doctor in orbit, was taken directly from Bernard Cribbins's own memories during his National Service in Palestine during 1948. An early idea was to have the Doctor sacrifice himself for an unknown technician from the booth - but having Wilf save the technician and to then be saved by the Doctor is so much better. And for Wilf to do the four knocks ... But the companion callbacks were a real highlight for me - a wonderful gift to the fans - and lots of trivia. Do you remember that drawing of RTD made for the Shadow Proclamation meeting during the Season 4 finale with all of the aliens? Well they didn't have the budget to show all of that, but they were able to create a cut-down version for the space cantina scene with Captain Jack and Midshipman Alonso Frame (from "Voyage of the Dammed"). RTD was (jokingly?) obsessed with Midshipman Frame - he's mentioned quite a few times in the email correspondence book. He was added into the scene because RTD thought that the Doctor just seeing a sad post-Torchwood Series 3 Captain Jack in a bar wasn't going to work. That cantina scene also has a reappearance of Tallulah's song we heard in "Daleks in Manhattan". The callback to the Joan Redfern character in the bookshop was very nice - unexpected - but it worked well. The director wanted to take it out thinking people might not get the reference to the "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood" episodes, but RTD said they should to keep it in. The callback of the Doctor saving Luke as he crossed the road was an in-joke. While making the series, it had been remarked that the child characters in "The Sarah Jane Adventures" never seemed to look for traffic when they crossed the road so, in answer, RTD wrote a scene where Luke has to be saved by the Doctor while doing just that. The post-regeneration dialog was written by the next season's show runner. "I don't want to go", The Tenth Doctor, "The End of Time: Part 2" You were great, David!

Stephen Males Oh. I should have refreshed this page before telling you what everyone else has already told you.

Nicologik

Stephen Males 1) According to the shooting script, and according to Russell T Davuies, the mysterious woman is The Doctor's mother. Which would explain why he looks at Donna's mother so significantly before deciding to say nothing. Why Russell T Davies decided not to make it explicit in the script I'm not really sure. Maybe he was just reluctant to give the next showrunner a backstory he might not want to follow up. 2) The lady signing books is the grand daughter of the school nurse who John Smith falls in love with in 113 in the Human Nature story. The granddaughter finds her manuscript about her experience and gets it published. 3) You'll love him.

Nicologik

Ian Smith Yes,as Johnathan says - it could be his mother. It's deliberately left open ended. Personally, I think it could equally be Susan, his granddaughter grown up. The name Verity Newman was an amalgamation of Verity Lambert, the first Who showrunner (An Unearthly Child e.g.) and Sydney Newman, the man who originally commissioned Dr Who.

Nicologik

Johnathan North Not only did David Tennant leave in the episode, but the showrunners Russell T Davies and Julie Gardener did as well. From next episode onwards the show was run by Steven Moffat, so the tone and style will feel very different, and make take a little bit to get used to.

Nicologik

Johnathan North and welcome to The Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith! "I won't like you just so you know, I won't ever like you. I won't get attached to you." Oh, you will, you will. It's the same cycle every time the Doctor regenerates. "No, don't go!" - > "I hate this new guy!" - > "Actually, he's alright." - > "Wow, he's great!" -> Repeat.

Nicologik

Johnathan North Though it was never confirmed in universe and is therefore up to interpretation ,Russell T Davies intended for the mystery woman to be The Doctor's mother, Whether or not she is though has never been officially confirmed.

Nicologik

Johnathan North The person you didn't recognize at the end during the book signing was the great-granddaughter of Joan Redfern, the woman The Doctor fell in love with when he was John Smith in Human Nature/The Family of Blood, and was even played by the same actress. That's why he asked if she was happy in the end and she asked if he was.
