I've been wanting to do this page for months! Really, ever since I created AlmaLu and her world.
In almost all fantasy stories, they have steel, but no industry. Why? In LOTR, it's a battle between the natural world and industry, with industry being destructive. In other D&D type worlds, you could say that the wide spread use of magic has made technology and industry useless. I mean, who would drive a car when you can ride around in an enchanted carriage?
But for my world, I wanted to make the use of magic VERY restricted. And, as the comic says, the wizards are all pacifists. They will help you find water, but not the means to make weapons.
So, what is the basis for our modern world of technology? Steel. Without it, you can't make trains, blast furnaces, iron bridges, cargo ships.
You can make a LOT with bronze and tin and brass, but you can't advance to our point .
A really big inspiration for this was finding out that the pyramid which caps the Washington Monument in Washington DC is made of SOLID aluminum. And when the monument was created, aluminum was more valuable than platinum! Now, who thinks twice about tossing an aluminum can out into the recycling? Same goes for a whole drawer of stainless steel cutlery. It's just an everyday commodity.
Unless you can't get to it.
I also want to thank my good friend Cee for helping to fill out the herd with some great names for all these hucows, as seen on the alternate cover of UDDERS issue 3 that he did. Heifelia sounds so great, and Limousina, or LiMOOsina, is another one I love! Since Limousine cows come from France, I had her 'moo' in French. MEUH!
