Those monsters are based on the protective spirits known as Fascinums (root of Fascinate: Bewitching, Spells) that were known to the Romans. They would even make wind chimes decorated with winged versions. Imagine that the next time you go to a garden center this Spring and see a wind chime with butterflies or hummingbirds. ;)
