The book describes why Denethor (Faramir and Boromirs father) is the way he was. He changed when his wife, mother of his sons, died soon after the birth of Faramir. Faramir wasnt the warrior Boromir was, he was more the "student" of Gandalf, who Denethor disliked. But the biggest reason Denethor was like he was, is because he had one of the all seeing stones that Sauron and Saruman had. Denethor was strong because he was able to not fall for Saurons seduction through the stone, something Saruman failed. So Denethor was more complex as a character in the books.
