How to use Texture rollers

A few of you guys asked how to use the Texture Rollers that Custom Miniature Maker gave to us this month, so they have written a brief walk-through for you all.

They have also included a 32mm Base cutter so you can use that to make bases for your troops! We added this to the monthly release files for you on Printed Wargames.

How to Roll Clay and Make Bases

What Clay to Use?

We always use DAS air-drying clay, usually in the stone colour option. The reason we use it is because it is quite cheap, does not stick to the rollers and when left to dry flat does not shrink like other clays.

Where to Roll Out?

You will want to roll the clay out on a flexible surface. A green cutting mat like one used for cutting minis of sprue or a plastic flexible kitchen cutting board works perfectly for this. 

How to Make the Clay Flat and Ready?

You will want to roll the clay flat first with a rolling pin before rolling the texture over it. Any rolling pin will work but we use one that has spacers with a depth between 3-4mm for making things like bases.

How to Roll the Texture?

Once you have the clay rolled flat and uniform you can then roll the texture over it using the texture rollers. Everyone has a different technique here, you can roll it slowly, turning the roller, or do it on one long single push, it all depends on what you find easiest. You can see how I did it in the video.

How to Cut Bases?

Cutting bases is really easy and the best part is that if you made any mistakes when rolling or any parts are not perfect you can simply ignore them and cut the bases from the best bits! You simply press down with the base cutters until you have all the bases you want. You then peel up the surrounding clay and put it back in the clay pack. 

It is important to let the bases dry stuck them down to the flexible mat where you rolled them. This prevents any warping or shrinkage. The once they are dry simply pop them off!
