Alright, the Darkness-spammers are here to party; Devils have a huge natural advantage in darkness, so it just makes sense to keep some squidlocks around to ink the place up. More even than that, though, these warlocks are built around looking and feeling powerful, around making sure that when they take an action, something of consequence happens. Can't be making the boss look bad, after all.
Their level 3 feature does make Darkness a viable spell up through higher levels, but they still do benefit either from eventually multiclassing for 2nd level spell slots, or from higher level 3rd party darkness spells (of which I do have a few).
As a reminder to DMs, though, action scenes where the PoV characters can't see aren't usually all that exciting. These can make for a really cool encounter, but if you're gonna keep using them you should give your players ways to work around the darkness.
