Watch Us Watch | Wicked

The long-awaited film adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the Gregory Maguire book inspired by the 1939 film adaptation of the L. Frank Baum book is finally here!

Wicked tells the story of the witches of Oz, Elphaba & G*linda, as they meet at college, become friends, and definitely do not fall in love with each other. Along the way they meet a talking goat, a hot guy, and Jeff Goldblum, all devoid of saturation and heavily backlit. Yep, it's gonna be one of those tracks!

Look there's so much to love about Wicked, but there's also plenty to loathe. For every Cynthia Erivo song there's a Michelle Yeoh song. For every Anthony Bridgerton there's a Spongebob. For every Dancing Through Life there's a Defying Gravity.

Wait, what's wrong with Defying Gravity?? Oh hunny, buckle up for the most explosive finale to any PMI commentary track ever.

That’s why it’s such a bummer they completely covered it over with CG in the final movie!

Pretty Much It

Just so you know the giant mechanical head was practical on set. They shot and used it practically. Maybe they cleaned up some of the mouth movements when it was talking, but it moved and functioned.

Parker Galen

in fairness this musical is two decades old and the book is older haha

Pretty Much It

Okay. Finally summoned the courage to watch this thing again, because of The Showmen. And wow. Just wow. Elphaba gets discriminated towards because the color of her skin? What a terrifying concept that this movie invented. Glad they spent the first two hours of this film to get me to understand that this is a bad thing. Hopefully they take advantage of the runtime of the second part to fully convince me. No, but seriously. As a white guy having no previous knowledge of Wicked, am I crazy, or are they actually treating racism as something they invented? Or that they are being sneaky about it by having it be about a green person? Like I get that the story is supposed to be a metaphor for racism, and I don't knock it, but did they have to add two hours of runtime to an already three hour musical in order to get across that racism = bad? Had this been the first two acts of a three hour movie, this could have been great, but this feels kind of condescending to the audience in some weird way. Can't really explain it. Like a "Gather 'round the fire, children, and let me introduce you to the novel concept of racism". Like, WE KNOW! All the power to anyone who finds inspiration from this movie to be who you want to be. Hell yes, that's awesome. But what about any of the things added to this movie over the stage production was necessary to get that point across? I'm sure anyone watching the musical understood that concept just fine. I can't accept the justification of adding all this runtime just to hammer home an already perfectly clear message. Maybe this time we do call the woke police...? Have I really become that guy...? Oh, god.

Simon

Miles having the crash out of the century during Defying Gravity had me in tears I was laughing so hard. For some reason, I was perfectly fine with the DG changes, but the Dancing Through Life scenes bugged the shit outta me. It's about 3x longer than the musical's version, constantly stopping and starting... That sequence pretty much loses me after Glinda and Fiyero leave the library. Always a pleasure to watchalong with the Showmen!

Jada Merritt

Miles crashing out at Eric is me to anyone expressing any slight criticism about this film (but yes I could've done with one or two less breaks in Defying Gravity 😔)

Leah

I am so glad I'm not the only one who shouts "BOQQQ" as aggressively as i can at the end of Nessarose's verse in dancing through life LMAO

Kelly Kay

“We can’t use little people again for munchkins, what ever should we do!” “I think the only minority we can make fun of these days is Gingers” “Gingers it is”

Macauly Leiher

Never seen this or heard the music before. So i figured the best way to experience it for the first time would be with the volume all the way down and ya’ll singing over it.

Jeffery Bezos

Every time I see the green baby i always think back to your showman commentary where they painted the horse

Aurianne Draws

YES that too! But the yellow brick road one is SO much clearer and easier to point out haha

Pretty Much It

If you loved the “follow the yellow brick road” motif your gonna freak out when I tell you that “unlimited, together we’re” in defying gravity is the same melody as “somewhere over the rainbow”

Sophie

Miles really pulls off the Witch look with the glasses and that big honker of his lol

Colin

YEs that video is so great!

Pretty Much It

Only half an hour in so don’t know if it is mentioned but my own Showman Fact is that Cynthia was part of the team that helped get The Greatest Showmen made 🤪

Connor Wiffen

I know I have a really unpopular opinion here generally, but "I'm not that girl" is probably one of if not my favorite musical theatre song ever. But I think it's because I've listened to it so much separate from the show that it's just it's own thing to me. I understand it's not very impressive or maybe as interesting as the other songs, but it just feels very emotionally vulnerable to me, and I appreciate that.

Leezzyzz

I felt represented by all sides of your arguments: me having heathy criticism when I'm talking about the film with friends who really liked it too, and also me madly defending it to anyone who tells me they didn't like it lol

stark. ju

I feel so validated by Eric's thoughts about the movie!! I LOVE it, but I think that Jon Chu doesn't let us see what works about Defying Gravity! When I saw it live, when it "cut to black" after the final note I had to CATCH MY BREATH. My heart was RACING, and during this I just kept getting frustrated because it was giving me time to catch my breath so it couldn't fully take it away at the end 😔

Ben

The Showmen are the only reason I decided to watch this. This is my first (and probably last) time with this movie, but this was super fun. (And as a lover of seeing it live, I agree wholeheartedly with all of your critiques that I haven't heard other people give)

Abby Mason

the jonathan bailey appreciation in this track. . .love to see it !!!

Ella

I actually have the opposite take from you guys, i really liked Cynthia but I don't think she lives up to Idina but i think Ariana really made it her own and it really worked, she was really the highlight of the movie for me (it might be because you say you just see Ariana Grande not glinda and i wasn't really that familiar with her before this) but i really think she is giving a really good different take from Kristin

ofek s.

Always love seeing the showmen back together!!!! I think you guys would really enjoy ‘The Wiz’. The songs are full bops and Diana Ross’ “Home” is transcending 😇

Nee

Yeah that's one of the few things I agreed with Eric on, instead she had to Synder style superman fly away

Alex_Dayne

also yeah all respect to michelle yeoh but i always skip her bit in "the wizard and i" 😭

Steff

so looking forward to cynthia erivo doing "no good deed" in part 2 because i already knowww it's going to EAT

Steff

Shoebill Storks finally getting the attention they deserve

Sarah Walker

when you all disagree you bring the "you're gonna look at me and you're gonna tell me that i'm wrong" energy which i find to be a beautiful full circle moment

lexi

WOOOOO The Showmen ™️ are back baby let’s go!!

Shrek

not to stoke the flames among the friendgroup here but, the fact that it doesn't cut to black after the AOAOAOAOAAAOOOO is one of the most insane and baffling decisions I've seen in a movie

staticstruck

hope you enjoy!!

Pretty Much It

Ofc i just meant it isn’t something I’m making up out of nowhere on my own haha

Pretty Much It

I saw the discord and was about to cry that it’s another week without the wicked track and then I opened patreon for coping and still don’t believe you uploaded it. Holy shit about to be the best 3 hours with the my showmen

DUG

Something about the shoebill stork excitement is also just so funny to me that may be my favorite part of the track

Quentin

i still think kurt hummels rendition of defying gravity clears but i did have a lot of fun with this actually this was very fun

Quentin

the galinda/glinda thing comes from the wicked book! except instead of it being in solidarity for him being fired it's because he fully gets murdered and she declares that she's going by glinda out of respect for him lol

Alesha Kenaley

On Bowen Yang’s podcast, they said there was a (very false) rumor early on that Idina was gonna play Doctor Dillamond

Ashley Lynne Evans

In an absolute shock move I am going into this not only having never seen the movie, but I also have not seen the musical. I only know defying gravity from glee. I saw the wizard of oz once as a child and that was it. Im a big musical lover but I could not be less prepared going into this

Quentin

and im saying she isn't THAT cold and witchy like from the interviews i've seen she just seems like a completely different person than elphaba meanwhile ariana been doing glinda cosplay for years!

k8ie

It works in any situation

Pretty Much It

omg NO he took my breath away!!!

Pretty Much It

Nessa’s actress is genuinely paraplegic, so that’s going to require some big changes all by itself.

Ryan

i hope you know that whenever you say "lets... go home" i know exactly what you're referring to and i also quote it in my daily life even when nobody knows what I'm referencing

Danika

oh man if they change it all up… I’m here for it

Pretty Much It

I thought when he first showed up you said you didn’t think he was that hot but maybe it was miles oop!

Hannah Curran

to be clear *I* am not making her seem that way haha, her bizarre interviews, etc make her seem that way to me. total opposite of her Elphaba!

Pretty Much It

THANK YOU

Pretty Much It

Cats was CG!

Pretty Much It

Wait what I’m sure i said i love him plenty no??

Pretty Much It

Also, for those who haven't heard Cynthia Erivo's other work, you have to listen to her sing "I'm Here" from The Color Purple. She won the Tony Award for her performance and it is outstanding.

Gillian

Not Edwina lmaaooo love the bridgerton references- I can’t believe you aren’t falling in love with Anthony/Fiyero Eric!

Hannah Curran

As for Wicked: For Good, I think they’re genuinely going to make the second act of the musical so much better. 1) it’s hard to make it worse 2) I feel like there’s just about a dozen areas to improve upon in both the storyline and the songs for the second act, so I’m actually really looking forward to what they come up with! I’m actually FOR them changing a lot of shit up 😭

Cameron

when you mentioned that all you see is ariana grande and not like an actual character i totally feel that! especially since ariana has an incessant need to act and sound and look like glinda for the last 2-3 years bc i guess?? she's a method actor or something?? so i'm being shown this person for the last 3 years who sounds and acts like this character since she clearly did not SOUND like that before she got the role so when im watching the movie it's like "oh it's ariana grande" meanwhile cynthia completely loses herself in the role (it helps that she is green lmao) even if i don't think she's as cold as eric is making her seem but she definitely has a completely different aura about her in real life than she does in the movie which cannot be said about ariana!

k8ie

I personally like the ending of this movie because she’s literally flying off to the sunset which is in the west… and she just told us that if we care to find her, look to the western sky🙂‍↕️ THATS CINEMA TO ME!

Cameron

team eric and ben shapiro they absolutely ruined defying gravity

claire

Bold to wish that the monkeys and animals were humans in a costume when we all remember Cats (2019)

Cameron

THATS ENOUGH

Pretty Much It

I wanted to rewatch the movie after I saw it the first time but knew to wait for the commentary track.

Malik Adams

Also, I'm hoping for Wicked part 2, we get a surprise costume reveal midway through where one of the Showmen paint their face green.

Gillian

In terms of Showmen hats, you all have really outdone yourselves with this one.

Gillian

I haven't even seen this track yet, and I'm already preparing myself to hear Eric retell his story of auditioning for Les Mis with "Dancing Through Life" haha.

Gillian

American democracy may be over, but the Showmen are always there when we need them most.

Gillian

have never been more excited for a commentary track in my life

Ella

YES FINALLY! MORE SHOWMEN AND THE BEST MOVIE OF 2024 ✨✨

Markus B

thank god we have some haters representing us! (i do hope i actually like it better than i did in theaters but woof…it is tough to look at)

k8ie
