last August I spent a lot of time writing all the details of the trio's backstory on twitter, so I may as well write about Jane's backstory too. she's supposed to be a major twist in Ugly Cat's story and in the original TDD comic so I don't want to give out her details to public yet, but I suppose can share it with my few friends and patrons.

so Jane was a Cursed One too, but how and what kind of magic she had?

a long time ago there was a group of people that believe in the healing benefits of magic. fyi Cursed Ones are immune to all diseases (due to magic running in their DNA) and some even have self-healing ability or regeneration from injuries. so a facility was built to focus research on these traits only, that if they succeed, people can actually use magic for medical purposes. such as curing cancer.

Volunteers were called to become the first Healer-type magic user. one of them was Jane, she volunteered because she wanted to save a family member of hers who is gravely ill from cancer. She'll do anything to find the cure, even if she has to use magic.

Magic injection process were extremely painful, as expected. out of all volunteers only Jane survived, she is now officially a Cursed One. More experiments were conducted as she was tasked to heal minor injuries from random patients. the wounds all healed instantly with no sign of any negative effects from the magic so far.

The research seemed to be a success. She's now able to heal major injuries and even cure sick patients in the hospitals. many people were thankful to her including her family. She was very happy to be useful, despite being Cursed.

But the good only lasted for a few weeks. Suddenly news were spreading that all the patients who were previously healed by Jane is now suffering from magic sickness. People were vomiting purple blood and are dying left and right because their body couldn't handle the magic that slowly creeping inside their bodies. the few who still alive became Cursed, and not in a good way.

So healing magic do have negative effects on normal people, it was just not apparent right away. Jane was deemed a failed experiment and the research was paused indefinitely due to protests. She felt extremely guilty and scared, what will happen to her now? She escaped the facility, but her family disowned her because the family member that she was trying to save also died from her magic.

The guilt was too much that she tried to end her own life. but no matter what she did, like cutting herself, jumped from a tall building, or get hit by a truck, her wounds always healed instantly. the realization just struck; she couldn't die. her healing magic made her 'immortal'.

"why all those people died because of me while I'm still alive? it's not fair"

Jane wandered around aimlessly as there was nothing she can do about herself. while still putting on a smile in front of people, act like a good girl and try to help strangers that she passed by to hide her Cursed identity and partly to make up for her past failure.

She refuse to use her magic again on people, but her magic keeps building up inside her body and she often feel sick and in pain as if it's eating her from the inside. she suffered like this for years now. she lost count how long she had been "alive" since the failed experiment, but if anything she just wanted this to end.

Jane met a few other Cursed Ones on the way and the first thing she always asked if they could kill her. some just think that she's crazy and refused, while some other are just not strong enough to outpower her healing magic.

and then one day, she met Daniel.
