..was thinking maybe an alternative explanation for now calling saskia his friend instead of wife was a beautiful detail indicating his love and respect and the relationships with both women he holds , as he is in love with his current girlfriend and says if saskia was here now id still leave with you but i wish i was back at the gas station ..and then also when his current girlfriend is leaving he says something like if only saskia didnt exsist and she says something like you had a saskia here now..meaning this is living present love and its a shame for us to part. Loved all of that if this is the case as showed true nuance of all their feelings in this distressing complex situation

Horror vacuii as a horror film, Rex's inability to NOT need to know what happened. One of the questions that came up: The reason he keeps referring to Saskia as alternately his friend and his wife (technically "woman") is because he's Dutch and she disappears in France; his French is passable but not great. He can't even express what she is to him to the people who are supposed to look for her or the guy who took her.
