Excerpt from the epilogue of Dustwalker:
Laraโs light breath tickled the sensors on his skin. He took her braid in one hand, absently running his fingertips over its length.
โI never thought Iโd have this life,โ she said softly.
โNeither did I. It is more than I could have ever hoped.โ
She reached up and brushed her fingers over his jaw. โEven after all these years, I havenโt had enough time to love you.โ
Her words pierced him; they were too final, too true. He settled a hand on her cheek and ran his thumbs over the fine wrinkles near her eye. Ten thousand years wouldnโt be enough, but thisโฆit was still too soon.
โWeโll have years more, still,โ he said.
โBots always say what they mean,โ Lara said, โbut that doesnโt make it the truth.โ
โLara, Iโโ
โShh.โ She placed a finger over his lips. Her smile was warm, though her eyes were tired. โWill you stay with me while I sleep?โ
โYou know I always do,โ he replied.
โAnd you know I always ask.โ
