Thanks, Jessie, for the ER throwback and on a Thursday no less, right where it used to rule the night. Pure nostalgia! The pilot still crackles. It is almost unchanged from its 70s script, just with 90s casting updates—Benton’s ego cranked to 11, Lewis now compassionate without being soft. Clooney is magnetic before “big star” Clooney existed, and his scenes with Margulies spark instantly. That great musical theme doesn’t hurt either. Also, hi to another familiar face as we just saw Margulies on The Morning Show. Noah Wyle is wide-eyed and baby-faced as an M3 med student, long before he’s running the ER on The Pitt. Watching him stumble through is quiet charming, and imagining a universe where The Pitt is an ER spin-off, as was originally pitched, is fun. (But I still prefer Dr Robby as a fresh new character :)) Mentor styles comparisons are a delight. Benton throws Carter into the deep end, Mark tries to be the calm, guiding hand. Not gonna lie, I still don’t love Mark, though I have a little more fondness for Anthony Edwards after finally watching Top Gun. Thirty years later, the show is quieter than today’s TV chaos, but the sparks, the energy, and those little nuggets of wisdom still hit. For the mid-90s? It was amazing. Hope you will continue to enjoy this season, and I hope some of your patrons will enjoy a rewatch or maybe even first watch with us :)
