Midsommar full-length reaction

Watched on: YouTube
Running time: 2:27

For copyright reasons, full-length reactions don't include the show or movie footage, so you'll need your own copy to watch along with me. Ideally, you'll need two screens or two browser windows. One for the reaction, and the other for the show you're watching. Using your phone is also viable to watch one of them.

As many different streaming services in different countries often play trailers or recaps before the show starts, the easiest way I've found to sync up footage is to find the first RECOGNISABLE frame (ie. not a black screen) of the episode. Don't worry, I'll show you the frame to look for at the beginning of each full-length reaction!

This will be:

✨The first frame of the opening credits.✨

OR

✨The first frame of the cold open.✨

Once you've found the approximate frame on your copy, pause it. Next, play the reaction and you'll see a countdown timer at the end of the intro and when the show is about to start. Press "play" on your copy when the timer reaches 0:00.

A small (but muted) portion of the show will stay on the screen to allow you to properly sync up your copy if you need to adjust it. The easiest way to eliminate any small discrepancies between the two is to rapidly pause and unpause the video that's ahead until both are running simultaneously.

Note: Some of my older shows might have the first frame after the opening credits.

Unsettling is a great way to describe it. And even Ari Aster has openly stated that while the film has a ton of symbolism and tackles a bunch of heavy subjects, everything from tragic loss, to relationship issues/conflict (friendly and romantic), to culturalism/traditionalism and what is/isn't sacred, to Norse mythology and symbols, to ultimate emotional closure, there's still a bunch in this film that's left to the viewers interpretation as well. I personally sort of see it as a bit of an homage to 70's cult based films like The Wicker Man and the like. Much like Hereditary is a bit of an homage to demonic/possession films of the late 60's/70's like The Exorcist or Rosemary's Baby. Same sort of slow and uncomfortable pacing and gradual horrific reveal. I will recommend that if you give it a second watch (or while editing) pay very close attention to all of the drawings throughout the film from frame one, to pictures in the apartments, to everything on the walls once they arrive at the colony as they essentially let you know exactly what you're in for (just TONS of foreshadowing in the film). Glad you liked it though. It's definitely a very different film from Hereditary, but equally as good IMHO as "daylight horror" is especially hard to pull off well. Much of the A24 horror output is very layered like this. I sort of just offhandedly refer to it as "adult horror". The kind of films that actually make you think a bit, tackle much more heavy and mature subjects, and have serious dramatic performances, over the jump scare type horror that tends to be cranked out by most of the rest of Hollywood these days (not that there isn't a place for that as well, I just don't personally find it nearly as interesting).
